SATURDAY VS. SUNDAY SALES AT ART SHOWS

Another thread posed this question. After a tiring workout this morning and about three hours on quarterly accounting, I'm too beat to work in the studio. So I'm loafing with my iPad. Interesting topic. I've seen it go both ways at Colorado resort areas. Monday after a 3- day show is usually slow. But, 2 or 3 days, the last day is usually 1-2 hours shorter for take down. To be accurate, you would need to compare sales/hour for Saturday vs. Sunday.

  • I am  a2d painter. I run my sales thru Square and they sent me the "Year is Over" summary. I was surprised to find that my best sales time was Sunday morning. Seems ,for me ,that folks look on Sat. ,think about it over nite and return Sun to buy, so I would have guessed Sun. afternoon.

  • usually, my Saturdays are slower for sales, as Maryllis said, they like to go home and measure, then return Sunday for the bigger stuff, anyway..But the majority of my good sales the past year were from custom orders after the show. Go figure. Gotta be ready to change to keep up with the current trend...

  • As a photographer I find the second is my best day.  If folks like something, they want to go home and measure the wall, and/or talk to their significant other, (determine if it matches the couch, giggle) and then come back the next day and purchase.  My perception is Friday is the day for retired folks or the stay at home parent.  They are usually gone by 3pm to pick up kids and fix dinner.  Saturday I see more young professionals and "good shoes".  Sunday starts after church lets out and ends well before closing so folks can go home and get dinner and ready for Monday.  So that's my take on it.

  • when shows are a full friday i personally find that fridays can oftern be the best for me as it can often be filled with serious, girlfriend shoppers, no kids, no husbands.  just fun for adults.  LAtely our saturdays and sundays have been alsmot equal.  we even did a show last year where the firday and sunday were close (and 5 away from being our best days ever) and saturday was not even close.  I think it depends on what you're selling for sure.  My new favorite show starts on Friday, not Friday night (those are dismal, mostly people who are coming back, coming in exhausted from work).

wonder if this is just an east coast thing......

  • For me it varies from show to show. I have had some exceptionalistic good Saturdays and poor Sundays but have also had some poor Saturdays and some exceptionalistically good Sundays.

Throw an occasional lousy entire weekends into the mix and welcome to reality.

  • from my experience Sat have been better than sun.  hours wise i find that sometimes it makes no difference.  have not done any shows lately where lights are needed.  figured when it gets dark and can not see product  i zip it up and leave..  last fall when did phx show  my sales on fri were nonexistent but sat was fantastic and sunday almost as good as sat.  with this show we wait at end of day and wait for first artist to close then we all follow suit

  • It would not be equal to compare a 9 hour Saturday show's total sales with a shorter say 7 hour show on  Sunday. Therefore Sales/Hour is an equal comparison. I may go back and crunch some number for a couple shows later which would illustrate this.

  • Are Saturdays better for Sales Than Sundays? Not my question, but it came up in another post and I thought bit was interesting for discussion.

  • I'm not sure what is your question, but I'll comment anyway. I've never had strong sales all day both days, or strong sales all three when the shows are longer. I've had strong sales all day on a one day show, though. Quite normally one day will be nothing, or a nice award and no sales, and the next will be gangbusters sales. I can't remember, maybe the first day is great sales and a nice award and the next nothing.

What good will it do to compare sales/hour for Saturday vs. Sunday? Shows require us to be present during all hours, so we can't pick and choose when we'll be open or not. Are you just trying to figure out the best time to go loafing with yer iPad? HA!
