I received this interesting email from the Peoria Art Guild asking me if I wanted to volunteer for their art fair. Of course, I'm only about a 3-4 hour drive away ;-)

That wonderful time of the year is back!
Dear Robert,

The 50th Annual Fine Art Fair is this year from September 28th-30th! Annually, the Peoria Riverfront becomes a live and in-person art gallery where you can SEE & BUY original artwork and meet the artist. There is also live music from local musicians, and a Kids Art Festival that is a destination of its own.  More information on the fair available at: http://www.peoriafineartfair.com/

The fair would not be possible without the help of volunteers; they are the lifeline of the event! It truly is a great event and there are many different jobs you can do to help including everything from being a face painter to greeting guests.

It's easy to sign up, all you have to do is go to VolunteerHub (http://peoriaartguild.volunteerhub.com/Events/Browse.aspx) or Click here, log in and than find a job that interests you and hit "Sign Up".

Hope to have your wonderful support!

I had to wonder how they manage their data base, and then ponder if they realize how all this comes across. I answered rather politely, rather than sending out a scathing response that would burn paint off a wall at 40 paces. This what I replied with;

Thank you for the opportunity, but I will have to respectfully decline your offer to volunteer. I've applied for your show as an artist four times, and been rejected four times. To be honest, it seems a trifle odd to ask someone who has been rejected for a show to then volunteer :-) However, it is a moot point as the date has already been filled in with another show. Again, thank you for the opportunity and the best of luck with your show.

Best Regards,

Robert Wallis

  • Add a stop at the bakery to get their sugar fix and sticky fingers from the doughnuts. Dead serious about replying stating that they all need a community service project.
    • heh, the letter is on it's way ;-)

  • WTH???? These folks just sent another email, same thing as before, asking me to be a volunteer. Something strange is going on over there. Maybe if I flood them with about 50 bogus volunteers, they'll stop sending out these emails.

    Just in case if someone from Peoria Art Fair does read these things;

    "No, I am not going to volunteer. You guys turned me down for the festival, so honestly why should I drive four hours to volunteer for a show I was rejected from? Check your mailing list and stop sending these requests to the artists."

    • How about telling them that you are bringing your entire Cub Scout Pack and all 45 want to be booth sitters. Maybe that will get their attention.
      • Good idea! How about if I mention that we'll be stopping by Starbuck's first and the Cub Scouts will be treated to a double espresso just before we get there?

  • of course if you really are mad at them you could sign up as a volunteer and then pull a no show

  • I wonder what those guys and gals are smoking in Peoria? I just received the third repeat of the same email today asking for volunteers. I guess they don't read their incoming emails where I told them "no thanks". It's starting to sound like no one in Peoria wants to be outside on a weekend, and they must not be in a volunteering mood. I don't think they're going to be too successful in drawing from the pool of rejected artists ;-)
  • They have a new director this year. I'd surmise that she got her mailing lists mixed up.

    I know this makes you feel badly after you've been rejected. I remember getting an email once from a show that rejected us and they wanted a cash donation for their fundraising. Ouch! And there was a big brou-haha a few years ago when everyone who was rejected from Long's Park got the "opportunity" to advertise their work in the show's program. Stuff happens...

    • It seems to be more common the last couple of years, but this year I've seen several arts organizations with their hands out for donations, either cash or art, and I've had three total now asking about volunteering. The issue with the volunteering tells me they aren't viewing the artists as full time working professionals, just hobbyist artists doing a few shows to defray expenses and we supposedly have lots of spare time.

  • I received the same request as well...and was also a bit confused. I have been rejected twice by them and wouldn't consider volunteering either. I'm a good 3-4 hours away too. I wondered if they simply mis-managed their data base spread sheets.
