Off to St. James! The whole story...

Here is the "insiders" story on St. James Court...the true story of a very popular event, an excellent long article that discusses these topics:
  • Why does the St. James Court Art Show Exist?

  • How is the show run?
  • How are the artists chosen?
  • Here’s how the judging process works:
  • How does the show make its money?
  • How is the revenue spent? --- (really important for artists to know this)
  • Economic Impact on the community --- (over $10,000,000 yearly)
and in closing:

"When you come to the show, know every dollar you spend goes to help an artist pursue their passion and add beauty to the world. It also goes to make Old Louisville, and our region in general, a better place. Most artists at the show make their livings from touring nationally with
their art."

  • This was the first time in about 18 years or so I had done St. James. I got in off the wait list for the Fourth Street section and had a booth about 7-8 spaces up from Hill Street. A lot of people walking and not many coming into the booth. I felt my display was about as good as it's looked in a long time, but having the best sellers up and a variety of work didn't translate to a good show, and I lost about a hundred dollars doing the show.

I did do my good deed for the year and donated a piece to a local children's hopital when the chaplain stopped by at the show and talked to me. I had an older print, the last of an edition of 20 I printed in 1991, of a pair of hands holding a flower blossom in a chiaroscuro light. She explained she had no budget for decorating the infant bereavement room where they gather families that have just lost a baby at birth or still birth. She felt the image was one that was appropriate to the setting. I looked at my wife and she looked at me, and we decided to donate the work. Normally, I don't donate work except rarely, but this one seemed like a good home to send the print to.

This was one of those shows that you expect much from, and when it doesn't happen, you have to start looking at yourself and try to second guess everthing and analyze why it didn't work out so it doesn't happen again. My first guess is that a location close to an entrance of a large show like this is not a good spot, as attendess aren't ready to buy from the first few booths they walk past, and then when they're walking out they're past looking and just want to leave.
  • You got it Robin, that is exactly what is going on.
  • I did St. James this year. My booth location was not great, a little off the main path. And sales were less than great. My booth was over $500. I had to pay $60 to secure off street parking. And I'm going to have to think hard about if my sales were due to my stuff not being as good as it should or could be, maybe my display? Or were sales just down all toghether? Basicly I feel like so many shows lately I'm just getting a small hunk over costs. And then I have to replentish my stock. I'm just treading water.
  • The show itself is amazing. The crowd is elbow to elbow, and heel to toe all day.I agree with Nels, sales are tough, today (Saturday) hit by rain in the afternoon. Just gonna have to work Sunday that much harder.
Met Nels (taking him up on his dinner tips tonight) saw Bill Sargent, James Parker, a few others. The show seems (from my limited perspective as a newbie in the court interior) as one that is quite a social event. Have to admit I was hoping for Ft. Worth sales, not going to happen but still a sight to behold.
  • ooohh...makes me glad I'm not there. Tequila shots is one thing, but snorting wasabi?

  • Boy, I wish I could go to this show. It sounds like a lot of fun and a great show. I am jealous, Lori.
  • Great, Lori! There should be a lot of members at St. James. Be sure to meet Nels. He should be on the Court on the street in the middle of the block.

We did this show for at least 22 years and loved the people and the excitement. Did you know they close the schools on Friday so people can come to the show?
  • I'm there, my first time. I've got a great space right in the middle of the action. I'll post a review when I get home
