Lying by Omission, TACA 2012

I asked on the artfairreview FB page if anyone else got notice from Taca, here's what I got back:

Rick Steingress Unless things have changed they jury for the next year's show AT the show. It used to be that only 15% of spots rolled over and were open to application. If you applied for the first time that may be the problem. If you've been doing it and got juried out at the show...well that sucks.

This was my reply:

Wow, this is another one that "lights me up." A grand screwing from a show organizer. Kentuck is the same way, 90% of the booths are "grandfathered" so if you apply you really are among a thousand people vying for 30 booths. It is unfair that they get away with that "lying by omission" thing. We should blackball these shows so that everyone becomes aware of these deceptive practices.

Is it possible to create a page in the group's facebook presence or on this blog that could alert artists to promoters' deceptive practices and ripoffs?

  • Although I know -- it's actually stated somewhere in the application -- that they try to keep the show more regional I live in New Jersey and did get in the first time two years ago.  Last year my scores didn't make the "invited" cut but I was accepted.  Unfortunately I had to cancel almost at the last minute so was nervous about this year but I did get in.

After jurying at the show they post the scores on Zapp and you can check - they add one point if you're from Tennessee which obviously makes it easier for state residents.  I was nervous because I am doing St. james the week after and with the cost of driving all the way south, I really need two shows.

Since our scores are actually posted on Zapp, I wouldn't consider this deceptive.  They give you the top number and your number and you take your chances from there.  At first I thought if I joined TACA it would help me but it has nothing to do with membership, it's where you live that gives you the point advantage.

  • For us our west, what show is TACA.?
  •

I agree it dose sound like intention to deceive. (Greedy) All show organizers should disclose how many spaces are open and how many are closed in each category so the artist can decided if the odds are worth applying to that show. We as a community of artist need to keep each other informed of this.

  • Do you have actual FACTS about how many spaces were open for open jurying?
