Doom and Gloom

307562.jpg?itok=MKL1iaWe&width=200A long time valued member of this site says he is tired of no action being taken on issues related with our business and will be leaving the site.

An advertiser who has tantalized me with an opportunity fails to complete the deal.

Poor attendance at an art fair which has delivered well in the past deals a blow to the pocketbook.

Unprecedented rainfall in NYC (13" in 24 hours!) destroys millions of dollars of property.

A beloved entertainer takes his life.

Endless problems of insurrection and political mayhem in other parts of the world seem unsolvable. And who is even thinking about how climate change that will affect future generations?

Feeling low this morning I turned on Morning Joe and then Good Morning America before I came to my computer. How long could I listen to that? It made things worse. Syria, Iraq, the Kurds, Gaza. OMG -- that was a wrong decision.

What do you do?

  • I always read the good book.

  • Connie, I think it is good that you care. It can be a bit much for one pair of shoulders.

I know that it is best to concentrate on what we ourselves can do.

Sometimes the only thing to do is to keep educated and informed, and not let that information destroy.

I appreciate your having the forum for all of us.

  • P.S. I too have pretty much had it with art fairs. I am thinking about dropping out all together also.

  • I rarely start my day with the news. Sometimes I go through whole days without it at all if I am lucky. A I tell my husband who will watch the local news through in the morning and 3 times in the evening followed by the national news…90% of it is about things that you can't do anything about. So it just weighs on your heart and mind and makes you feel bad setting up the day for sadness and melancholy. I usually get up and head outside for breakfast on my deck or a nice bike ride or walk in the woods where I carry on a nice prayerful conversation, thanking God for all the blessings in my life and praying for others.

  • I agree with Allan Anderson about keeping the site on topic about art. Enough of the political etc. rants on Facebook. If you want to changed the world, volunteer and do a little.

  • Looks like fun!

  • Wonderful discussion. Thanks to everyone who has chimed in.

What really started this for me was that life is so much more important than the tiny kernel that is me and what can I do to not only overcome these feelings but to lighten them and make things better, not just for me.

My good friend Jack Stoddart has left the art fair business and now is doing some of those things. He just posted this:

  • I have a fantastic idea.  Let's leave discussions on Politics, World affairs, religion etc. for other forums (Facebook?) and focus on our industry here.  The only world topic appropriate is China, and how do we cut down on the Buy/Sell crap at Art Shows!  Not that its not all relevant, I rant on FB all the time on these issues.  But we have enough to talk about regarding our businesses to get off on those tangents.  Just one guy's opinion.

  • Connie, focus on all the great stuff you and this forum have done for our industry.  This is by far the best place to go for information and advice from fellow contributors.  You cannot please everyone.  You have no control over the actions of others.  You cannot change the industry.  Hang in there and please keep doing what you are doing!  I hope to meet you someday and thank you personally.  Perhaps this winter in Florida?

  • I try to leave the tough world-wide decisions to the people who get paid to make the decisions.  I do not have access to the information our President has and trust that with his knowledge and humanity he will attempt to do what's best.  I too, am a Morning Joe person and a Ed Show watcher.  I try to support causes that work toward peace and eliminate suffering throughout the world.  Doctors Without Borders, CARE, Unicef, United Way, etc.

When it gets too overwhelming, I switch to the music channel and listen to new age type music that seems to sooth me and I can focus on what I'd like to achieve today. One day at a time.
