Credit Card Advice?

I'm off to my first fair in 17 years, thanks to the galleries who've been doing the selling meanwhile.  I hadn't ever taken credit cards but probably should if I'm really diving back in.  If someone could share a summary of what the process is to apply for Master Card, Visa and American express, as a merchant I would appreciate it.  Must I get an ipad or laptop?  Also, any advise, tips, warnings etc would be great,  Thanks, Kathy

  • I usually get my money from a weekend show by Tuesday or Wednesday.
  • Thanks Laurie, that sounds reasonable to me - I have the square - now to get the phone. . .
  • It usually takes about 2-3 days for the funds to transfer for me.
  • So far, I am sold on the Square and you all have provided good information.  However, I have read that there is a problem getting the funds transferred on a timely basis.

Does anyone have any experience they can share related to this?  Thanks

  • You know, everyone needs to quit reading comments and research the issues if there are any issues themselves.  We are as responsible for any misuse as the company we use that passing through the information we collect to complete our credit card charges.  We as the credit card taker are still responsible to make sure we and the company we choose to use is PCI compliant.  Merchants are required to make sure they are PCI compliant and that makes us PCI compliant to a degree.  We are still responsible for the information we collect and how we store it. Square would not be able to process if they were not PCI compliant which they are.  To learn about PCI compliance you can search the web but here is a link on Visa's site http://usa.visa.com/merchants/risk_management/cisp_merchants.html

Here is a link from Square's site too telling you they are PCI Compliant https://squareup.com/security

  • Judith St. John Peterson says....<<but try to make sure you get one the new units that's been re engineered to encrypt the transaction at the time you swipe your customer's credit card.  Dave>>

Why does it matter whether or not she has the version that encrypts the transaction as it is swiped?  Unless she is the thief, it doesn't matter.  The only person who can take advantage of that anomoly is the person swiping the card if they've monkeyed with their phone.

Do you not understand the original issue, or are you just trying to spread fear about using the Square?

Lets say I have one of the earlier devices.  I have no reason to upgrade since my device is safe unless I decide to become a thief, modify my phone and steal credit card data using my square.  Unless the person swiping is a thief, the older devices are safe.

  • I am changing over to the square and will be giving it a try at our last show in November.  If I am comfortable with the square and it meets my needs I am going to sell my wireless cc machine come Dec 1.  I have an Nurit 8000 it has been a great machine and I have used it since 2005 one time owner me. I'll be asking $450, + you pay shipping cost.  It will come with the machine, power cord, computer connection, phone connection and 3-batteries.  The batteries alone are $70 ea new, so I have included them at $35 ea so you are actually getting the machine at $380.00 one free battery.  If you think you may be interested send me an email to maryshafer@cfl.rr.com
  • The version that works with the Macbook (and other personal computers) is the version that ties into Quickbooks, and you can enter transactions manually while dealing with a customer over the phone. I understand it can also be used over the Internet with your website. To take charges at a show you will need a unit that your smart phone (or other devices - see later) slides into. With that, you can enter the amount and swipe the customer's credit card. Check out the last website I mentioned (<<http://payments.intuit.com/products/basic-payment-solutions/mobile-...;). Look for "Compatible Devices - see all devices" and click on that link. There you'll find a list of all the devices you can use. While you're on the Intuit site, click on the "View Demo" button.

We use a Verifone unit with our iPhone in my wife's business, and are very happy with it. If you're going to tie with Quickbooks, you'll probably be better off with an Intuit card reader. Else the Square would probably be a good choice - but try to make sure you get one the new units that's been re engineered to encrypt the transaction at the time you swipe your customer's credit card.  Dave

  • One of the things I did when I lost my phone was to have my husband bring me my laptop from the hotel room.  Square does not work on a laptop.
  • I jumped for Intuit a few days ago when I first started reading about it here.  I was told in chat with them that I could use it with my son's macbook.  That's why I imagined the square could work with a laptop (seems wrong though).  I lost contact with the chat person before learning how to use Intuit with the macbook, but a reader is on its way.  I got the free low volume version for now.  It sounds like a good idea to have both on hand, with Square as the 1st choice to  have the simplest, ultimately lowest charges.  But I'll look at Verifone too.  An ipod touch looks more affordable than the pad, but I'll need a magnifying glass.
