First show ever
A one-day street show during which it rained the entire day. (Still, I sold 3 items!)
What are the best things about art fairs
Good quality outdoor ones attract very large crowds, which 1) increase the possibilities for sales, and 2) provide you with invaluable customer feedback, particularly in terms of ideas for new products.
Best show ever and why
The 2011 Spring Bayou City Art Festival in Houston. The weather was perfect, the attendees were buying, and the staff support was terrific.
Worst show ever and why
An indoor mall show in the early 1990s in one of Chicago's southern suburbs. (This was before we came to our senses and realized that by and large when people go to a mall, they're goal-directed. They're there to buy a shirt or a lawnmower, etc. They're not there to buy art.) The artists and crafters (some of whom were very good) spent the weekend visiting with and buying from each other. Expenses exceeded income by quite a bit.
