  • Lynda, I am curious to know how this fair was for you. Would you return?

    Thanks!

    Gaby

  • I hope things have changed too. On the other hand, Evanston is a great town. With Northwestern graduating that week end, there is sure to be some spillover traffic.  I'm going to stay with a friend who lives within walking distance from the fair-pajama party! Even the worst shows I've done, money wise, have had their positive aspects. I'll be sure to post what the experience was like this year.

  • I did this once years ago, I'm hoping for any artists sake who is doing it that it has changed a lot since then. I was on the "fine art" street. My neighbors were tye-dye t-shirts, a wooden children's puzzle booth and an obvious representative for a laser wood cut image company. The T-shirt folks made quite a few sales...
  • I bet the guy still looks at his/your photo and remembers your wonderful words! I certainly would.
  • Oh yes, I did. That's why I remember it!
  • That was a perfect response. Did you make the sale?

I would love to be able to use that line over and over that weekend-or any weekend!

  • There you go!

One of my favorite sales ever was to a man who really loved one of our photographs. "But," he said, "I just can't buy it now as I am starting graduate school." Ever the manipulative sales agent, I replied, "that is exactly why you should buy it. To enjoy and remember why you are in graduate school and what that schooling will do for you in the long run."

  • Absolutely I do! What would be better than to give your graduate a fine oil painting to act as the 'seed' of their life long collection of fine art. Every once in a while stories arise of regular folk who spent their entire lifetimes collecting art. Every single person who buys a painting from me or from any of us has the potential to be the next Herb & Dorothy Vogel. I also sell greeting cards of a few of my illustrations and do very well with those. : )

Just got a note from the Custer St. Fair committee-I'm a bonehead. The application does require images...I know, I know, I know...it's just like writing a grant. Part of the game is that those who can read all the details and answer the questions correctly will go on to the next level of play. I thought it was weird to NOT be sending in images of art.  So I just sent my images in. NOW, I'll cross my fingers!

  • Lynda, I don't know a lot about this event, except it is very well attended with many extraneous activities. It is a "festival", not specifically an "art fair". Very smart to sign up for the parking! The fact that it is on graduation weekend is great -- will you have anything that would make a good graduation gift?
  • I live in the 'neighborhood', sort of, I'm about 30 miles north and west of Evanston, out in the sticks as it used to be called. I've had this show on my radar since day one,. Several friends had mentioned attending this show and spoke highly of it. I applied the other day. There was no jurying process, I just filled out the online application-got stuck when I came to the pay for parking fee. Spoke to a friend about parking in Evanston,  my friend lives a few blocks away from the site of the festival and the festival producer. I know first hand how incredibly challenging it can be to find parking in Evanston, like it doesn't exist-wow-out of towner beware.  I bought myself peace of mind and paid for the parking.

This year Custer St Fair coincides with graduation at nearby Northwestern university, so the town will be overflowing with thousands of extra people. The show did not require any jurying...but, it's relatively nearby, I need some practice close to home, the income levels in Evanston are very high and people I respect have spoken highly of the show. Despite no jury process, I chose to participate.

Any other AFI'ers going to be there? Anybody have first hand knowledge of this show? I didn't see any reviews on the Art Show Review portion of this site. I'll be at booth C28 on the west side of the L tracks on Custer St. Looking forward to it.
