Well as I was pushing my 3rd EZ-up in 5yrs together yesterday I dont know what happened but 2 of the rails broke at the cross bolts.

I have parts from the last one so  guess thats what I am doing today.

What is a better brand of ez-up style? I had (well I thought I had the better of the EZ-up brand. I have seen other companys. Some look heavier built.

I do my shows by my self and for finacial and health reasons I cant go the trimline and lite dome tents.

Thanks for any help.

Rich H.

  • I spent a lot of time researching 10X10 pop up tent models. The number of options is pretty overwhelming. I've had to replace two cheaper models and it's frustrating. I happened to be in the right place/time when a local business owner was getting rid of a heavy duty tent. All I had to was get a new canopy for it. The frame was from a company in Michigan called TentCraft.

I called them and told them about the frame and they had a new canopy to me in 3 days. I guess their tent models are pretty expensive so not for everyone. I can tell you the tent is a beast and is going to last a long time. If anyone is interested, here is their website www.tentcraft.com

  • I am currently using a Caravan Classic that I purchased in 2008 and it is still going strong. It is a pop up and is very sturdy. I did have to replace one pull pin leg bracket this year which cost me $8.00 + shipping and took a whole 5 minutes to replace. I would not give my Caravan up for anything.

  • I'm on my 7th year with my Caravan pop-up.  This year I replaced the top with one from a Caravan that a wind gust destroyed. Lost count of the number of shows, but it's probably around 40.

My only Caravan complaint is the sidewall zippers.  They don't seem to last.  I'm on my 3rd set of sidewalls.  This time I bought the $50 cheap type.  Almost see through, but they held up in a really windy weekend show.  At night I wrap bungee cords all the way around to keep the sides from flapping and tugging at the zippers.  During the day I wrapped the cords around 3 sides.

One thing that has helped my tent survive is using steel gridwall for panels.  I make 2-3 complete walls of gridwall and fasten it tightly to the tent legs in 3-4 places. This strengthens the legs and keeps the tent from swaying.  If the wind can sway your tent, it will eventually break one of the joints.

    • I called Caravan, the number on my canopy, and they have "refurbished sides walls" which are new, still in the package, apparently Costco has many returned canopies from people who use their canopy for a weekend bbq and return it the following week. The unused sides are returned also, still in the package, so they have to sell them as "REFURBISHED".  a set of 4 sides for $25.00 ( I got the thin ones for emergencies) + $20 for shipping.  So I purchased 3 sets and sold 2 sets on Ebay for $85 a set.  They have refurbished canopies at a great price but shipping is $100 from Washington state.

    • Hey Dave, You can purchase the sides made of the same material as the top with heavy duty zippers for about $280.00. It is a worth while investment.

      • That's probably what I'll do when these give up, or at end of our show season.  Got my almost new top for free, so I may spend some on the sides.  Or, for $280 I could buy 5 sets of the cheapo sides:-)

  • If you have any of the pop up style tents it is best to make sure all the moving, sliding parts are sprayed with silicone spray every few times of use to keep them moving easily.  This will stop the parts from binding and breaking.

  • Thanks everyone for the replys. I replaced the broken rails yesterday with ones from the 2nd frame.

So I am good to go for now.

I have seen at shows all that have been mentioned. The KD looks good but I see that it has no sides. But I can get them from EZ-up.

I just about bought a Trimline but I had Esopageal Cancer and had my esophagous removed 5 years ago. So I  cant  bend over.  I would have to get down and crawl  on my knees to put the roof together.

    Thanks Again

  • King Canopy has one with some very strong legs that are hexagonal. I've had a Sam's Club EZ-Up for many years and had no trouble with the frame. The tops leak like a sieve so I bought a John Mee canopy for it and been happy since. You might consider how you're folding up the frame. If you jiggle the frame up and down as you collapse it, it folds up easier with less stress on the scissor joints.

  • KD Canopy make a heavy duty similar to an EZup. Bought used, lasted over 10 years. Not bad.
