What's up in art fair world this weekend? Are you going to be participating in any shows?

On my radar:

  • Funky Ferndale (Ferndale, MI)
  • Atlanta Arts Festival
  • back to back events in Chicagoland - West End Art Festival and the Lakeview Art Festival
  • Leesburg, VA - a Paragon show
  • and one of my favorite "secret" shows - Fallasburg Fall Festival in Lowell, MI

Will you be attending any of these? Where will you be found?

  • we are doing the Atlanta Arts Festival this weekend. This is our first time doing it and are looking forward to the show. The weather is fantastic and is predicted to be this way all weekend for the show.

Will take some photographs and do a review when we get home and can type on my computer instead of this little gizmo

  • Here's a little more about the Funky Ferndale (MI) show, which skews demographically to lots of 30-50 year olds. Not only is there the art fair there is a DIY event right next to it and lots of fun for everyone this weekend. Hope you all have a great time.

  • I will be in Leesburg Va also. Looking forward to having two days of no rain(I Hope).I am going to be sure to bring something warm to wear in the morning since they are calling for temps to be in the low to mid 50 degree range.
  • Weather has been a pain in the butt this year.

  • I just canceled for Sloan's Lake show in Denver. This is a first ever for me in over 20 years. We just got back from the gym and these rains in Colorado are not the typical thunderstorms but one band of moderate showers after another around the clock with record accumulations. The runoff is causing all sorts of problems with traffic, roads washed out, railroads washed out etc. Forecast is 40% for Friday the set up day, then 30% Saturday, and 50% Sunday show and take down. I take about $50K of leather goods to these shows and my inventory is most vulnerable during set up and take down. I can eat the $465 lost compared to loosing a lot more due to water damage. I cannot see many people visiting an art show if the weather breaks. Most will be digging out and cleaning up.
    • This had to be a hard decision. Things do not look good in Colorado this weekend. I've always thought of that state as "God's country" and I know many people who yearn to be there, but this season with the fires and now the floods surely is not good. Do you suppose it is because of the liberalization of marijuana :) ?

      • LOL Connie. It probable from the extra rising thermals of the toke smokers. Seriously, Sloan's Lake was canceled this morning. Email said that the 52 out of 100(?) that did not cancel will get $40/$100 credit for next year for jury/booth ($40/$425). I won't get anything since I canceled but will note that for next year. Hmmmm. Looks like those planning to just be no shows get the deal.
        • Sounds to me like they should do what the Estes Park people did.

The organizers will be taking a big hit financially because advertising $$ and manpower $$ that cannot be recovered, but if they can get around that I really like the option of a refund or considering the fee to be a payment for 2014 and reinviting all who juried in.

That's what I'd do ;) Oh, wait! I'm not running the show ...

          • I sent Sloan's Lake an email about no-shows getting benefits but not those who called to cancel because of weather. We will see if the squeaky wheel gets anything. Danna Tullis, show manager, called this morning with follow up to email sent out today. City of Denver shut them down. Kudos to management for the contacts with artists.
            • I got an email from the Sloan's Lake (Denver, CO) show yesterday. The $40/$100 discount will be extended to all accepted artists who apply next year. I'm pleased that a logical argument plus informing them that their previous decision was posted on AFI with comments got results. FYI it's been raining all night in Colorado again 9/23/13, and there was a little snow for the scaled back Elk Fest in Estes Park yesterday.
