June with five weekends has been full of terrific shows. This weekend has one of the very best in Des Moines. Will you be there? I'm sure a bunch of you will be in Chicago for the Gold Coast show, right?
Me, hoping to attend the Crosby Festival of Arts in the beautiful Toledo Botanical Gardens and then a family reunion in the middle of an old centennial family farm somewhere in northern Indiana on Sunday.
What about you? Big plans?

I was nice seeing you Connie again at Crosby!
Making final preparations for the Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival... And working as hard and fast as I can to get more inventory built up... Westmoreland is always one of those shows that depletes inventory fast. And maybe meeting Larry Berman!
Finally, a weekend off. We're going sailing on the Puget Sound (thanks to Dad and his new sailboat) on a weekend with a heat wave that supposed to approach 90!! That's hot for Seattle and very unusual for the weekend before the 4th of July when this area is still in the rainy season, we're looking forward to being on the water, time to find the sun screen!!
This is a very big weekend in Des Moines between the event downtown and then even more at the Fairgrounds. Wishing Stephen King and his crew and the many artists there great weather and an enthusiastic group of buyers.
Here's a nice article I found online about the show and tips for buyers/collectors. I'm going to copy it for next week's newsletters that go out to 40,000 art buyers who are on my ArtFairCalendar.com mailing list:

Good luck, Jacque. Hope you'll report back.
Jerry & I were very happy with the show, We heard from customers about the show being advertised on the radio and newspaper. Set up on Friday evening was smooth, good crowds on Saturday, could have a little more people on Sunday, everywhere you looked customers were carrying purchases. Sue worked very hard to work with everyone, we did not hear of any complaints besides some fresh fruit for the artist would be appreciated along with the coffee in the morning. After the show was over and most of the artist were gone, they let vans and smaller veichles drive into the building, always nice for the ones who need it.
Connie - This is what upset so many (and rightfully so) in the DM Register:
"It is OK to negotiate on price, but be respectful. These artists make their living through these sales. Asking for a 5 to 10 percent discount is reasonable, especially when buying multiple pieces."
As the show reviews on AFI reflect, it's often hard enough to make a buck without someone telling potential patrons that point number 1 is to negotiate.
Connie, you should read the comments from the artists in response to the article when it was in the Des Moines Register.
To say it was not received well.......
Equate it to the article about 57th street a few weeks ago and the art heist at Bayou City.
Artfest Midwest Des Moines, inside, air conditioning, chocolate chip cookies, great friends to get caught up with, and a Japenese resturant with a private chef Sat. night with our family, We are just going nuts getting everything ready and packed. And hopefully we might bring home some $$$ (think positive!)
