Stained glass display

Hi everyone! This is my second post to this forum. I have read many discussions of display equipment, but haven't found anything that would work for stained glass. About 80% of my work is best shown with light transmitting through it. Propanels are expensive, and don't allow light through. I purchased some grid walls for a fair I did this year, and while they were OK, I understand that most jurors are turned off if they appear in your booth photos and they may not jury you in if you use them. I'm looking for some ideas that are out of the box, shall we say? Any display equipment would need to fint into the back of my SUV, light enough for me to carry by myself, and strong enough to hold the weight of the glass. I have several pieces that weigh in around 10 lbs., while others are much lighter. My vehicle will carry anything up to 5' long. I'm fairly handy, and would like to try to build something myself rather than pay a lot of money for something that may not work. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I hope to get some booth shots done before the snow flies, as I would like to start applying for art shows as soon as possible for next year. Thanks for any and all help! Debbie

  • What if you got the stay bars system from flourish, for around the top of canopy and suspended your stained glass from that? you could get multiple sets, vary the heights of the bars, to create different levels, for hanging. Then 3 sides of your tent would be "display", with light coming through. Possibly figure a way to suspend some bars to hang in the inner part of tent, from the ceiling? Just brainstorming, here.

  • There was a stained glass artist not to far from me at a recent show who had duplicated the Armstrong display in oak. It was very nice.

  • I'm not a glass person.have you considered panels framed with PVC pipe that can be assembled. Keep pieces from rotating and swinging with cord. Really wild would be green oxidzed copper pipe to appease nut case jurors. LOL
    • Thanks, Richard. PVC pipe is rather ugly, and though building something from copper would be cool, it would also be very expensive. Chain works well with glass and keeps the pieces from swinging too much. Thought about using some kind of pipe with chain?

      Can PVC pipe be painted?
      • Yes PVC can be painted, spray or brush. McMaster Carr online has more PVC fixtures than you will find at a Home Depot. They also have all types of copper and brass tubing in lots of diameters. Everything you can think of industrially there. Yes, copper or brass would be expensive but quite different. Be sure to stabilize well. I have seen wood frames filled with stained glass go over in slight gusts because of the wind resistance.
  • Basically you need something that looks like this:

Too bad the Armstrong panels are discontinued.

    • Thanks, Larry. Yes, I saw the armstrong product, but can't figure out what I would use to duplicate the design. Any thoughts?
