Some advice please

Howdy, I could use some advice.  Jerry & I will be visited by a couple art buyers next week, they are VERY interested in a large piece that we have.  They are driving  6 hours to meet us and see the piece in person.  My question is how do I treat them?  Would cookies and colas be alright to offer them?  I have our photo book updated already.  Should I have  some kind of write up on Jerry & I available?  Is that to much?  I am trying to plan ahead but don't want to overact either.  Advice???

  • If they are coming all this way it is 90% sold. I agree with Dick, relax, offer refreshments, give them a tour, maybe show them how you created the piece they are interested in. Do you have anything that looks good with it? Geez, I sound just like him. Let them know you and your life a little. You are selling yourselves and your life style as part of the package. If someone wants to come to see you they are very interested. Assume the sale. If they come to see you at an art fair there are lots of other distractions, but coming so far out of their way it is you -- keep us up to date on what happens. It should be interested.

How do they know you and the work? See you at a show? Have you met them before?

    • Yes, the sweetheart that started this, saw us at a show in their town and requested a donor to purchase it for their foundation.  Even though she saw it in person and we have it on our website the donor wants to see it in person and talk to us, (yes we feel positive about it).  I just realized that I should play hostess and wasn't sure how...I appreciate all the advice

      • Sounds like a done deal to me! Very, very nice. Who said you can't make money at art fairs?

When it is over will you do a blog post -- from the first connection to sealing the deal and how you prepared? I think that will be helpful for everyone here.

(one of my favorite stories like this was some people drove down from Detroit - only 2-3 hours - to buy a piece. When the woman had chosen it her husband said, "we came all this way just for this?" At which point a light bulb went on in my head -- "what do you do for a living, sir?" "I have an asbestos removal company."

We had recently moved to this old home in a small town and all the pipes were covered with asbestos and I figured we'd never be able to sell the house in that condition, so I invited him to the basement and a deal was done! Art for asbestos removal ...

  • Relax. They obviously know about you and your work. Refreshments fine. A tour of your studio and showing work in progress sparks my clients interests. Rare old saddles being restored, new saddles under construction, antique tools being used at the bench da da da da. Tailor it to your medium.
