Recycled or Green category

Does anyone know of shows that either have a green category or give extra jury points if the artist uses recycled materials. I photographed the work of an artist that lives in Iowa and is interested in doing shows in that part of the country. Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, etc.

Thanks

  • Larry-  I am going to try & ignore the mean spirited  responses that you have received & try to give you some information that you can actually use!

Most of the shows that I participate in do not have separate categories for recycled art.  I jury in under Mixed Media or Fine Craft.  I find that good quality recycled art is welcomed at many shows.  My booth is generally packed with customers & show promoters often tell me that they love my art because it is fun & they have not seen anything like it.

The Indie Craft shows feature many recycling artists, as do Folk Fairs.  As far as the Indie shows there is Renegade in Chicago, Milwaukee has Art vs. Craft, & St. Louis has the Craft Mafia & Strange Folk.  Googling Indie Craft Fairs and Folk art fairs bring up more possibilities.  The Galena Country Fair is a good one for recyclers, & From the Land, outside of Green Lake, WI, also features recycled goods.

Many Habitat for Humanity Restores sponsor recycled art shows & competitions.  I also find that around Earth day many Green events look for recycling artists.  If anything else regarding this pops into my mind, I will let you know.

    • In Indiana, there is DejaVu Fine Arts and Crafts Show in Columbus, IN mid-November. I think there is also one called Hatch near Chicago, though I've never been so cannot be certain of the quality.

  • Larry, I understand and I just recently did a show in Dallas that was a first one ever. It was awesome and it was all about recycled work. They had a scrap metal company donate iron and had artists competing in iron sculpture, all kinds of cool stuff. It was amazing how many people attended the show! It was a place the Dallas is trying to revitalize and get community awareness, ribbon cuttings, city council and the mayor were in attendance. I sold 7 pieces, wow! I was excited. It was called " Cedars West Art Festival" It was over Memorial Day weekend. I know too late for this year, but I had to comment on this post. There are a lot of people who want to buy recycle, it is a good niche.
  • Points… I for one don’t do shows to get points…I do shows to get my art in front of people, potential Customers.

  • I’m curious to know how documentation is provided that materials are recycled. (Of course it is obvious with some work, say sculptures made from industrial parts).  Since the source for a great deal of jewelry precious metals is someone else’s scrap, that would mean that most jewelers would qualify. But there is no way to prove the source of the new sheet / wire you buy is scrap or newly mined metal. You could prove you melted down your own scrap, but many return it to the jewelry supply company to have it melted down, then buy “new” material.

  • Hi Larry, I do shows in the SW so don't know specifics, but some general things apply.  No you will not get any jury points - the work and the photos still need to stand on their own and even knock socks off.  Some shows have mentioned that they have an emphasis or special "zone" for arts incorporating recycling.  Open Arts Downtown Boulder is one that I recall.  The show did not have a special "zone" that I recall but recycling of everything was encourage - ie they gave water bottles out (reusable ones) and came by to refill them.  I contacted them before the show and they were excited to see my work because of the recycled component.  The one downside of possibly being in a "zone" is you maybe surrounded by low pricepoints and "crafty" work.  It's a risk and would be for me.  Hope this helps.  Kay

    •  It is a complete deception that any artist should get points for use of material.  Do you seek honor in this fraud?

  • There are a few arts and crafts people in the Norfolk, VA area that do specialize in recycled or found objects.   I don't know of any special jury or judging points, and the only real category for them is mixed media.   There are several different styles that the different artists use, but if the idea grows, there may be a need for a category.  For example, a couple will paint on recycled objects, another sculpts.  Their work is good and it sells.  They may not fit into the higher end or fine art shows, but they do good at local shows.

This is not not "junk" looking art - I've seen that done too at a couple mainly craft shows.   These are artists that artisticaly enhance their recycled objects.  Hard to describe as each is different.  Remember, everyone's idea of art is different.  It wasn't so long ago that digital photography wasn't allowed in many shows!

My comments probably get a little away from the original question, but no I don't know of any shows that have that category yet.  I think if the recycled artists get together and form some guidelines, then there may be shows that can add the category.

  • I've already recommended the Huffman Productions Autumn Festivals in Omaha, Chicago and Shakopee MN. This isn't high end art that will compete with the three artists who already responded.

Unfortunately the three of you have probably scared anyone else who might have contributed away for fear of being ridiculed for what they do.

    • excuse me but the bottom line here is that any single artist who thinks they should get points from the jury MERELY BECAUSE OF THE USE OF MATERIALS  is seeking to abuse the jury system. You do complete dishonor to the entire venue for bringing this discussion to us --- but I suspect it is an attempt to create dialogue on a forum that is otherwise dying - hence the Open/Closed Forum thread this past week.  Of course this is merely an opinion with no known basis in fact.  BAH--- DOUBLE BAH ... I am so tired of artists being used to make profit off the other adjunct functions.  go away.
