Table coverings are a frequent topic and I thought I would share how I make mine. I cannot express how few sewing skills I have. I also think if you do most of the prep work, you could take it to an alterations person and get the single seam made for very little. I recommend using a stretch fabric as it is forgiving. If you use a ‘natural fabric’ please wash and dry the material before making a table cloth. Ok wash and dry any material first and you will have no surprises.

Set up your table.  This is the key for the non-sewing. Put the top piece on the table upside down and cut it leaving an inch over the edge.

Measure your table with your risers from the top edge to the
floor. Add one inch. Mine comes to 36. (1) For the sides measure up from the selvage (factory finished edge) to your measurement and mark with a piece of chalk.  Draw a line with a ruler and cut. (2.) Pin the two sides together on the table wrong side out. Put the selvage on the bottom so you don’t have to hem it. Take a contrasting thread color and baste the seam. Basting just means big awkward temporary stitches. Take out the pins as you go.  At this point flip it right side out on the table. It should look good, if not make adjustments.  Sew the one seam along your basting. Take out the hand stitches and you have a custom fitted tablecloth. (3.)
If I was taking it to some one else to sew I would baste it twice. I leave a slit open in the back to access all that great new storage you have. Another seam you don’t have to sew.
