Hey Everyone; It's Allison,

I've decided to make the leap and try for art festivals. It looks exciting, fun, and a lot of hard work. I'm up to it.

I am mainly painting fine art oils depicting wetland/shore birds. I will also have giclees for sale as well. You can see my work at my site: http://www.allisonrichterwildlifestudio.com

I would like to start in November going to a show in Florida. I am considering in November -

Boca, Delray, and St.Augustine. Any feedback for these shows? Also, I'm trying to match my type of art to the right festivals. If any veterans have some input I am all ears.

Thanks so much!

  • Hi Allison, glad to have you here and welcome to art fair land.

Dave has the info exactly. If your subject matter is wetland/shore birds best to go to those communities and events that focus on this. People with a narrow focus of subject matter draw more interest if they narrow their focus also. There is a relatively famous black and white photographer, Clyde Butcher, whose work is in many museums, but his focus is on the Florida Everglades. The last time he showed his work at Cherry Creek in Denver he had nary a buyer.

  • Your work should go well along the shore communities.  You may want to also look at Wildlife Festivals.  A lot of my photography is Shore Birds and I do good at the Currituck Wildlife Festival in NC, and also at the Decoy and Carvers shows in Chincoteague, VA.

The thing I've found with Shore Birds, and with wildlife in general, is that you have to find the right buyers.  That's probably true for most forms of Art, but I think it's especially true for wildlife.   Wildlife themed shows and shows in beach communities seem to do the best for me.

Good luck, and welcome to AFI!
