I really enjoyed the podcast, most things discussed reinforced what I already thought was true. So, how do I follow your #1 rule when most of my work is religious? I make enough other work that I think I can come up with a small acceptable set of images for jurying, but what happens when I show up with pieces that reference The Bible and the Qu'ran? I haven't applied to any shows (I've been selling out of a gallery) because I don't have a booth shot. I'm going to fix that over the holidays, but the booth shot will have religious images in it. Help me ObiWan...(Sorry the attached images are so big, yes, I could use coaching in that area, too)

Sex, politics, and religion? I've got all three in my GI Joe and Barbie series. I've had a few gallery shows with them, but no dice when I used them for jury shots. I've had a few moments when I considered doing larger versions of them and doing a booth shot with them for those shows I've never succeeded in cracking since they didn't like my more conventional work.
In the Southwest we have Santero artists at shows. It all depends on the demographics of the show location.
Politics: if show in CO is in a Republican stronghold, I will make extra leather napkin rings with eagles on them and we will have extra bandanas with flag themes to go with them. In the "Peoples' Republic of Boulder" as it is known in CO, anything goes LOL.
If that's what your art is then don't worry about it. It is what it is. But you might run into the same problem as artists that have an occasional jury image with one of those three topics (or anything people have strong feelings about) within their images. There are shows out there for every type of artwork. My experience is in applying to the top shows.
Just remember when choosing your jury images that topics people feel strongly about can either work for or against you in the jury room.
