Newbie Yolonda here. I'm excited to see such a great site and after looking at the forums for a bit decided it was time to participate. My category is jewelry and I specialize in textile techniques specifically crochet and knit jewelry. I also love metalsmithing and combine techniques in my pieces. I have decided to transition into making my jewelry full-time in 2012 and decided to get my feet wet by doing a couple of shows this fall.

I have recently applied for two shows, one in the middle of July and the other last week. After applying for the first show, I was placed on the wait list and I'm no. 8 on the list. Two days after the update in zapplication, I received an update from zapplication and I noticed that my show was on the list with a new application deadline date. I was a little concerned and wondered what was going on but figured there was a good reason for it. I called the promoter and found out where I was on the wait list and confirmed that I lost points on my booth shot (I missed the part about not having signage in the booth for a blind jury selection).  I applied for a 2nd show with the same promoter after making a change to my picture. I felt very good about things. Now, today I rec'd a zapplication update email and once again saw that my show was on the list of upcoming deadlines and now the date has been extended to 8/10. So now, I'm irritated with this and wondering if I should even bother with this promoter's shows. I haven't seen anything bad about the promoter.

Has anyone run into something like this before? Is there a good reason for why the promoter would do this? In the meantime, I've decided to apply to another show that is coming up in my immediate area on the same date and will doing another booth pic because of their requirements.

  • I had the same experience. I assumed like Lynn said that they were looking for art other than jewelry when the deadline was extended.  Personally, for my first experience with a true juried show, I was happy to get on the wait list.  I'm looking at it as a learning experience.
  • Don't feel bad, I have a beautiful banner and just have been put on a couple of wait lists and not been called.  It is as if you have to have connections as well as good product, especially in jewelry which is what I do.  Your story sounds exactly like mine.  I am trying to lessen my work at the hospital by one day to start and then ease into retirement making my jewelry.  Don't be discouraged, but don't waste your time on start up shows either, they are a lot of work and no profit.
    • Christine,

I was so excited that I missed that portion of the application. But you live and learn and now I know not to place my banner in when I'm applying for a blind jury selection. I'm excited that I didn't get disqualified! If you feel like I do, you're so excited about what you do that you can't wait. I very quickly figured out that until I put full-time hours in, I will not get as good as I aspire to be and will not have the inventory. I love what I do and realized quite some time ago that I do not "fit" the industry that I currently work in.

  • Hi Yolanda and welcome to AFI!   I'm from Australia so can't help you with opinions on wait lists etc as its all quite different down here, but I can feel your anguish if that helps!  I'm sure someone will pop in with some great advice soon :)
  • It could be that they are extending the deadlines to get more entries outside the jewelry category. Jewelry is one of the most popular (if not THE most popular) category and fills up fast.

It is odd to see extensions if they've juried one category, however. I haven't run into that before.
    • Hi Lynne,

Jewelry isn't the only category. It is a fine arts festival with 12 other categories. That would make sense to me and that's why I wasn't bothered the first time. The 2nd time took me aback because I wasn't expecting it.

  • More information is needed. What promoter and what is their history in handling wait lists or extending deadlines.

I do free image evaluations (especially the booth)
