  • these responses were very helpful…thanks so much

  • Sometimes it's better to give something away than to offer a discount. But it also depends on your medium and material cost. I just shot senior pictures for the daughter of the guy who cleans our house every month. I did it as a favor without expectation of any compensation. I'll prep the images for whatever they need them for and won't have any material cost expense, only my skill and time. I've done professional portraits for all my family members and have photographed every family function for the past 25 years.

If a family member is asking to purchase a piece, they expect to pay something if not the total selling price. It's up to you to do what you're comfortable with.

  • Like mentioned before it depends on who the person is.

I usually either give them the item, or at the most charge them the material costs.  If it’s just an acquaintance (not a close friend or family member) then I may just charge them wholesale cost.

Of course a lot depends on what the item is, if it’s an original painting or something that took weeks of work to create then that would probably be a different story.  Most of my items are in the $40.00 to $100.00 range so an item now and then won’t break the bank.

I’ve found that a kind gesture usually pays for itself.  Most of my friends/family have helped me numerous times when I need a hand with something (i.e. loading a vehicle, borrowing a tool, etc).

  • Depends on who the relative is and how much business they do with me or send my way. They usually get some discount but not a free ride. There are others I prefer to just send down the road and tell them I am too busy now. LOL
