This has happened to me a couple times now. I work my butt of to complete/ modify pictures to hit an application deadline (with a few hours to spare) only to find out that suddenly they add another month onto the deadline. I'm assuming that they didn't get as many applications as they expected but I cannot express how frustrating it is for me.

I get irritated when notification gets delayed due to a deadline change. Sometimes when I apply for 2-3 shows I am counting on being able to make a decision about traveling and then one acceptance deadline will occur before the other notification does.
It just seems unprofessional to me I guess. My day job is all about hitting deadlines, so I take them very seriously. This shows deadline was a good month before others I am going to apply to so I ended up shooting a new booth shot during an afternoon thunderstorm in order to hit the deadline. If I knew it was soft or they extended it a couple days in advance I could have waited till the next weekend to stage my new booth shot and not got so wet (I like how the shot came out, just didn't like getting so wet to do it).

Yeah but until its extended it is not soft at all. I think you are thinking that there is something insincere going on but the reality is that they put out a call for artist, waited until the deadline and after evaluating the responses made a business decision to extend to allow for some more applications. The initial deadline is a serious one for this purpose and if you want to make sure you are going to get considered then its the most important one, the extensions don't matter as they are iffy at best.
I wouldn't worry about the extensions at all if I were you as they are completely random and only of value to those that need to apply after the deadline for some reason such as a family emergency or job interference. If for some reason you are unable to hit a deadline to a show you really want to be considered for then you can hope for and extension and if there is one then go for it.
Yeah, I get why you are frustrated...a deadline is a deadline and that's the way it was for so many years. It's a tactic to fill the spaces as best as they can. I have fallen for it a couple of times too, by submitting an application after the original deadline because I'd been on the fence about it. No regrets.
It does happen with some top shows, too. And it happens more and more all the time now. I think it happened with Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival just last month. And I've seen it happen with others even TOPPER than that one, but I'm keeping it under my hat since my memory might not be very good on exactly which ones.
The best advice is DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST DAY TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION. I can't remember where I read about this, but the article mentioned getting the application sent in earlier rather than later.
Why does it irritate you, Valerie? The show will most likely still notify you by the date stated in the prospectus. I don't think notification gets moved back as much as an application deadline date does.
I've seen that happen several times and is obviously because it is not a show with people biting at the bit to get in. Never seen this happen at the top shows.
