Cease and desist on Square

I'm trying to decide if I should switch from my old terminal to square. In talking to one company they told me there is a cease and desist order on square in Illinois due to improper/illegal usage.  Has anyone heard of this or is he just trying to get me to use his company?

  • I heard a lot of doom and gloom from my credit card company when I switched to Square.  None of it has come true.  Square was there for me when my terminal died and I was told I needed to spend $400 to replace it.  Square was there for a fellow artist whose terminal died and I lent her my spare Square.  All you need is a smart phone, pop it in, and you are up and running in minutes.

  • I had no issue using my square device in Mundelein, IL at a September 2013 show...

  • I have used Square since it came out. I know many artists and owners of brick and mortar stores including restaurants who use it also. I have had NO problems. I am noticing more and more vendors using it.
  • I was told that Square was not encrypted - by someone who was trying to sell me another program.

I use GoPayment by Intuit and have not had any problems as all. It seems to be user preference.

  • I am from the great state of Illinois where we hold the record for Most Governors in prison at the same time, having the most Governors sent to prison, and largest number of politicians per capita to be convicted and sent to prison. We need every cent we can get to support the cost of incarcerating our politicians.

this may clear up the issue.  I have used square for almost 3 years now, and love it.  works great, when signal is low can switch to wifi, encrypted transaction, receipt goes right out to the customers email or phone... and square stores a running spreadsheet for you to download from your pc...

  • Much Ado About Nothing. The way I see it, the CC companies, merchant services, and banks have been taking money from you for years. Along comes a new technology that cuts through the nonsense and is cheaper for you in the long run. The bad guys are in cahoots with the government and are trying to find some way to stop the new guy from messing with their cash cow. So, they will try any trick to hassle the good guy. Btw, I hear that Jack Dorsey, the inventor of Twitter and the Square is running for mayor of New York. This is really good news if this is true.

    • Barry, I don't mind paying for the " bite" they take out of my hide as long as the service is top of the line and there when you need it. I.E. I hit refund on a swipe sale, and because the accounting had closed by the time I got home (cc data not stored by law) I thought I had lost $60. My bank split it with me. I think most would say you are SOL. It is a cost of business passed on to the client.
