Booth Review Request

I have never asked for a booth review on here and decided maybe I should. I am presently living in Charlotte, NC, and Corning, NY; about half my time in each. Most of the shows I do are in NC, SC, TN, GA, MD, PA, WV, and NY. I have attached a photo, but here is a link to the booth photo on my AFI page as well... http://www.artfairinsiders.com/photo/booth-display-1?context=user

  • Hi Becky,

Let me start by saying that your booth is beautiful, eye catching and tastefully appointed.  I do agree with Janet, however, that the floral banners distract one's eye from the art itself.  Perhaps for the sake of the Jury shot, you might want to try all black and then add some color back in at your event to draw people in.

    • Thank you, Christina! I actually get a lot of positive comments on those floral panels and how they compliment my work. I tend to use the same colors in my work, and a lot of flowers too. So I wouldn't have even thought not to use them in my shot, but since that is the most common suggestion, I think I better! Thank you very much for taking the time to look and comment!
  • Your work looks amazing. If I walked by your booth as a patron I would walk in. BUT this is not the issue in this post right? How much feed back do you want? Remember that there is often only one jeweler on a jury. Jewelers are often the biggest category when juring a show. Let's be honest ones booth shot counts for a lot in the higher end shows. I am a 2D artist. I try to learn as much as I can about jewelry so I can be fair but the booth shot helps give a juror an idea of the level of sophistication of the work. I know it isn't a popular reply but it is true. IMO the shot needs to be farther back to see more of the booth. The bottom section in the middle with the grass and tent walls is distracting. The banners would be nice to see fully. Don't get me wrong this is a nice shot. I have some horrific booth shots from the past and still not happy with what I have now. If you have a chance to ever attend an open jury do it! You will learn a lot. Please don't take any critique badly. It is really awesome that people take the time to help. You have the work and talent in your art and like I said your booth is great at a show. Now you just need to get the booth shot down. We all do.
    • Thank you Melanie! I agree, it IS really awesome that people take the time to help! I am going to use all of these suggestions to try and get a better shot! Thank you for your suggestions... much appreciated!
  • Here are a couple of posts about the St. Louis art fair mock jury that have juror comments, and cover booth shots in good detail. The first link here is from 2012, http://www.artfairinsiders.com/profiles/blogs/artist-image-workshop..., and the second link was from a year later and goes into much more detail, http://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/st-louis-art-fair-mock-.... You may want to skip the first two parts of the 2013 report and read the third part as it covers booth shots specifically. Each section has a link at the bottom leading to the next section. The comments on these are equally valuable and worth the time to read.

  • Becky, LOVE your jewelry as I've told you before. When I looked at the booth the first thing I noticed were the floral banners. I think they detract from your gorgeous jewelry, make the tent look a bit busy for the jury process. I'm with Barrie on the suggestion to replace the floral banners with photos of your work...or maybe just go with plain black, no photos or floral banners. I think it would look elegant / classy for a booth shot. The floral banners would be fine at the show 'cause we only have a few seconds to catch attention and bright is always good.

I just got told by a jury that my booth shot looked "a bit dreary" so yours truly is going to re-do the shot and brighten it up! I was already headed in that direction anyway so good to have some feedback.

    • Thank you, Janet! I used to hang 3 photo banners on top of the floral banners and was told by a show director that he felt I had too many signs in my booth. I appreciated him taking the time to offer his opinion, which I value, and looking at the the before/after went with using the floral banners alone. Now I guess I better rethink the fabric as well, at least for the booth shot, since that seems to be the common thread (no pun intended) in these much appreciated suggestions. I need to work on a new photo!

Or are those banners examples of your jewelry? They might not come across as that.

    • Thank you, Barrie. Yes, the three photos on the banner that is suspended on the back wall are samples of my work. The floral pieces on the display counters are fabric panels.
  • Very nice looking booth to see in a show. BUT, the colorful banners are much brighter and catchy than is your work in this photo. You don't get much time for a jury to see your image, so I'd figure out how to feature your work rather than your booth decor. Maybe the photos of the work on the back wall in place of the flower banners?
