There are a lot of incredibly smart artists here.  Remember how our parents always said "get a degree so that you have something to fall back on."  Well, look at the education these members have to fall back on.

Carla Nee is a Massachusetts Maritime Academy Alumnus.

Alisa Butts says she is an accountant by day and artist by night. People are always amazed at my use of both sides of my brain.

Toni McCarthy is a  retired English teacher who's enjoying the best years of teaching NOW!

Christina Miller has a Bachelor's of Science and not art, but she loves art and gets to stay at home with her 3 children.

Ravay Snow holds a doctorate which is totally unnecessary in his work painting animal portraits.

Judith Visker went back to college after a career as an RN.  She received a BFA and a MA in 2002 and has been dedicated to her career as an artist since that time.

David Sigel  went to Marine Mechanic school recently.

Brenda Helt is an English Literature and Gender and Sexuality Professor.

Jason Brueck  works as an attorney.   He says "there can’t be too many of us attorney artists out there, can there!?!?"

Bruce S Bauer, MD is a surgeon, an artist, and a bike fanatic.  There can't be too many doctor artists out there either.

Undoubtedly we must have many other highly educated artists here, as well.  Anybody else  care to share your educational background with us?

  • Thanks to everyone who contributed here.  I, for one, have enjoyed reading about the diverse backgrounds of many of out AFI members.  I know this, it takes an intelligent person to make a good living sell their art.

  • Went to college for one and a half years studying photography.

I work as a Master Printer at a fine art photo lab for the last 8 years, with an additional 12 years of lab work.

    I only shoot film.

    Sober for 14 years.

Live with my partner of 12 years.

I think doing art is the best education.

  • I'm not degreed, but I'm highly educated.  Went to 7 colleges.  No BA degree yet, but no school debt either, paid as I went.  138 credits undergrad, mostly fine art.  Worked as medical transcriptionist 23 years before launching 3/4 full time as vendor.  Went to the following colleges:  Western Michigan U., Center for Creative Studies, Davenport, Cornerstone, U of M Ann Arbor, Kendall Art & Design, Glen Oaks C.C., Kal. Valley Comm. College, and Kalamazoo Inst. of Art.  Whew, nice to take a break from it all at the flea market.  I published my medical illustrations in 2 college textbooks and a Medical Journal, did midwife illustrations when I was overseas in Haiti (short-term mission) for a year as Administrative Secretary.  Did a couple 9 foot murals also.

  • I have a degree in International Studies with an emphasis in International Human Rights. I work in Marketing and I am a jewelry designer on weekends and at nights.

  • I'm a Data Manager for Lilly by day with a BS in environmental science...  but I'm a Beader by night!  My Mom is a full time painter/ sculptor and we support each other's work & do fairs together on the east coast.

  • I have degrees in art and behavioral science, and turned down acceptance into medical school to pursue a Master's in social work instead. I've been a therapist who worked with teens, and then later with adult victims of abuse. Then I changed jobs and helped set up new domestic violence shelters and train law enforcement, psychologists, and nurses who work with victims of abuse. I also helped develop Native American counseling programs with tribes across the U.S. I've written books that are used to train therapists, and the royalties from these books sustains our family financially, allowing me to paint full-time, day and night. I'm Ojibway Indian from my mom's family.

  • I hold a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and worked for a few years as an RF (radio frequency) Design Engineer for a company that developed remote-read and smart-grid solutions for utility meters. My job was cut during the 2008 recession and my love of photography slowly began to consume more of my life. Within a few years, I entered the art fair world and am enjoying the adventure!

  • We  certainly have some awful smart people here.  Every time I get in here and check I am amazed.

  • after 35 years in finance I became disabled. With a little money and lots of time on my hands I found out I am an artist????? We're called "Gellers" (Gel candle producers). It's flexible enough to be either art or a craft. I'm in the process of also writing a book, The advanced geller's reference book.

  • Karen Dixon, PhD, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics.
