Although most artists use Square for processing credit cards, I use Clover Go, a First Data product offered by First Bank where I have maintained my personal and business accounts for over 30 years. I like keeping financial things under one roof. For use of the swipe device for my IPad, I pay both a fixed monthly fee regardless of sales processed, and a variable fee based upon the sales. During the winter, I may process 0 to 3 sales per month but during summer when I do art shows I may process over 30 credit/debit card sales per month. Last winter when I noticed that a monthly fee was over 14% of the sales processed, I decided to take a closer look at where this was originating. This is important to me not only for the amount paid, but also knowing how much I might be giving up with a discount to close a large sale paid by credit card. It is also important to include these fees in pricing. The analysis I present below goes beyond what a representative will tell you about your bank fee being “3-4%” for processing credit cards. Clover Go allows me to accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, PayPal and American Express Cards. The fee rates for Visa, MasterCard and Discover are the same. I do not accept American Express and I have not had any sales using a PayPal card, so I cannot comment on them other than past knowledge that American Express fees were historically high.
Table 1 shows three monthly examples of the fees charged for various amounts and different number of sales. The 14% is what motivated me to look at the fees more closely. Table 2 shows all of the nickel and diming that goes on at the bank. These fees are calculated by either a fraction of total dollar sales or total number of sales. It also shows the fixed monthly fees charged regardless of sales. Table 3 is a calculation for the second example in Table 1.

That is entirely to many numbers and calculations for me to comprehend. That is where my CPA comes into the picture. I like to keep it simple and basic with no monthly fee and a set 2.7%
Richard...My bank does not have any fees or service charges. I thoroughly scrutinize my transactions and bank statement frequently.. In fact they pay me a very small amount of interest on my checking account as long as I keep a minimum amount in my monthly balance...and in the many years I have had this account I have never ever dropped below their minimum requirement. I use this bank account exclusively for anything relating to my art show business.
The ONLY fees associated with my use of Square or Paypal is the 2.75% with Square and the 2.7% with PayPal. Both Square & PayPal deposit the money directly into my bank account without any additional charges. Square does it automatically and I log on to PayPal to do the transfers myself.
If your bank has service charges that go above what the fixed charges for Square or PayPal have then it might be a good idea to look into a different bank. I have four different bank accounts and Regions Bank is the one I use for my show related expenses.
Interesting, but sounds more like my personal account. Studio account is a corporate business account. I still believe somewhere along the line the artist running the card is paying these fees. I cannot imagine a local bank, Visa or MC absorbing them. I had to dig a little deep to find these. I thought it interesting that the fees were different for credit and debit card. American Express just sent me some slick (expensive) advertising to take their cards which I can, but don't want to. To me it is just a cost of doing business and my pricing covers it, so the consumer pays it. I use PayPal a lot too.
The artist paying the fee only consists of the 2.7% that square or paypal charges. The bank doesn't charge any fee because the monies from square or pay pal are just being deposited into your chosen bank account.
When I first started using credit card processing I used a card processing company that charged a $14.95 monthly fee regardless of whether I used it or not. On top of this they would add other charges that they never told me about when I signed up...and their very small and well hidden fine print mentioned a 2 year contract.
Square and pay pal came along and they were the absolute best card service to happen for artists without the hassles associated with the old school credit card processors that didn't want to change because it would mean less profit for them
