Where are the shows?

I live in Pittsburgh, PA. I am a photographer. This (2011) is my fist year doing shows. I guess I picked the wrong year. I have done several shows and so far I'm a little below even. That's not counting the amount I paid to build indoor and outdoor displays, canopy etc.

Unfortunately, the shows that I have been finding even though having a modest attendance seem to have a lot of boy scouts selling hot dogs and crafters with wonderful works like the mini marshmallow gun. HELP!

I have a large show at the Monroeville (Pittsburgh) Convention Center coming up and a few smaller but hopefully better shows coming up. I need to find more in Pennsylvania and the surrounding states. I don't really have the funds to go too far.

My work is salable and well displayed. I get LOTS of compliments, but they don't pay the bills.

Any ideas?

  • I'm from Pittsburgh too, and also looking for good shows (who isn't?) .   I personally think Fair in the Park is the best show in Pittsburgh.   I have applied to a number of shows and haven't gotten in (eg State College, Long's Park) and gotten into some one year and not the next - now thats frustrating!  I would suggest you take a really critical look at your work slides that you submit, and your booth slide.  If you haven't registered on Zapp and Juried Art Services, you should.  Unfortunately its hard to tell if a show is a dog until you've done it!
  • Family Festivals is a Stoner show. It's a mixed bag. Some artists, some hobbyists, and buy sell vendors. For actual juried Art shows you have what Larry said- Three Rivers, Shadyside, Fair in the Park (pgh craftsmen guild show), & maybe Art in the Park in Mt Lebanon. Other than that you have to leave Pgh. The State college show or Boalsburg might be options. How far are you willing to travel?
  • Sounds like you are on the right track. Keep digging around. Ive done Long's Park and State College. Both good for me.
  • Monroeville is Family Festivals. I am looking for juried shows or higher caliber shows where my work will be displayed with other artists, not resale merchants.
  • Hi Don,

I also lvve in Pittsburgh but do find that I have to leave the 'burgh often to do bigger shows.  What shows have you been doing?  There are a variety of different level shows in Pittsburgh but Larry is right about the top level shows.  I assume the show in Monroeville is a Stoner show.  I did it once!

  • Welcome to our world....It takes about 5 years to get this train moving . This is not a quick buck or easy life. Not only to you have to choose the right shows, you have to get into them. And its not easy. It can be and is satisfying . But you are entering into the business where the seasoned veterans and polished pros are struggling. You can succeed but if you thought that this would be an easy side job or easy cash....those days are long gone my friend.
  • You are discovering the importance of choosing the right shows. It's also not unusual for it to take a few years until you start making a profit at shows on a regular basis. Jeez, I still don't make a profit as often as I'd like to. Other shows in your greater area worth considering is State College, Boston Mills, and Columbus Art Festival. Good luck.
  • There are three shows in Pittsburgh worth doing. Three Rivers (either weekend), Fair in the Park in Mellon Park and Howard Alan's Shadyside show.

There are also a lot of lower level shows that may or may not be worth doing.
