We blew it in Blowing Rock!

The next time I tell you that I am driving nine hours to exhibit in a one day show, grab me by the arm- or better yet, chain me to my fireplace! Blowing Rock is a beautiful high- end area in the mountains of North Carolina mostly for second home buyers...for years Bob and I have been told by customers and friends from Florida that we should do this show- and how well we would do , there if we did...the shows runs monthly from May- Oct..the second Saturday of each month except October when it is on the first Saturday.. The crowd shows up early( by 9a.m.) and it is crowded....very crowded, but with the exception of one artist that was near us with wall art, nobody sold expensive work. I think if your work sells in the $50-250 price range you have a chance otherwise, it ain't happening sister! I don't know why...we had so much interest, but even with our great selling skills :), people were just not buying much...it's too bad....such a beautiful area, great restaurants, and lots of charm...no more one days shows for us this far away.If people have to measure their walls for your work, one day is not enough time...so long Blowing Rock...it was a nice getaway for the beauty of the area, not for the sales...

  • Thanks Barbara, we did the July and August shows this year...nine hours...one day..not enough time for people to think and measure..by the time they want our piece we are half way back to Cleveland!
  • blowing rock is charming...only 10 minutes from me...i think the economy is hit hard here...gallery sales are way down as well.i'm in a gallery there and one in foscoe...blowing rock was once such a sweet show when it was held in the park....i did it once back then...late 80s...the tight parking lot just doesn't do it justice...patrons can use a little space when thinking about buying a large work of art...i prefer to show in other places...mostly coastal from the keys to new york..but i was surprised with a great show in roanoke this year...and will be doing charlotte...and manteo was great...n.c. art market may be a bit down over all but its still happening in spurts.......
  • Barbara, you're jewerly designs are so beautiful, I can see why you would do well there or most anywhere.
  • This is the second year in a row that I have applied & have gotten wait listed.....maybe next year. I make jewelry in the 89-900 range, and only live 4 hours away.
  • Too bad Blowing Rock didn't work for you, Patti. I have also heard legendary tales of the affluence and sales, but WAY too far for us to travel. My favorite one day show (six hour drive) was Charlevoix, MI, always the second Saturday of August. Lots of second home owners there and so beautiful at that time of the year. I always considered it my 'vacation' to be there.
  • I tried it years ago after my florida customers told me to.........same result as you.....too bad because it was so close to home.
  • Thanks Nanc ~ we leave tomorrow and have hope!
  • We have not done the show before, but have heard great things...we always go into these things with a positive outlook...otherwise I feel I give myself bad karma..a good attitude and conversation I feel can turn that iffy sale around....now, from my mouth to Gods ears!
  • No, Nels- we are not doing Crocker Park- but we will see you at levis Commons this weekend :)
  • Patti, you should have asked me over martinis, I could have saved you a lot of heartbreak. Will you guys be at the Crocker Show in Sept?
