The Summit, Louisville, KY

I'm not a big fan of mall shows, too much compation for the dollar with the brick & mortar stores so I was a bit apprehensive about this show. I need not have been as it turned out to be worth the trip from FL.

The Summit is east of downtown in a very upscale neighborhood and the show layout runs along the street in front of the stores. The booths were single file and you could either pull in front or behind your space to unload. This is one of the Howard Alan shows that has a Friday setup yippee. Breakfast was provided both days by Costco, very much appreciated. Advertising was very good, lighted road signs, commercials, and live artist interviews on a local station on Sunday morning.

Saturday was very hot, mid 90's which unfortunately kept crowds down, I didn't even make expenses. The next day was polar opposite, sunny, low 80's, no humidity and packed with people wanting to buy art, I didn't sit down all day. My neighbor was a dress maker and she did very well, busy all weekend. A painter I spoke with said it was one of his best shows.  Breakdown was was also very easy, most of us could pull behind our booths, pack, rack and go.

This was the first time I've done this four year old show but it's  going to be added to my summer lineup as it's well worth the drive.

  • Thank you Connie and Lori for the encouragement!  I've decided I don't have enough inventory to justify the $500 fee at the HA Chicago Tribune Fair in July --though I'm sure tempted!  Instead, I'll try to get in a couple "closed" shows to keep my momentum going-- Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question-- I love this forum!
  • Even with jewelry I've managed to talk my way into shows at the last minute, be prepared to email shots of your work & display. Good luck Susan
  • Susan, there is no harm in calling those shows whose deadlines are past. Not all shows fill from the application process and wait lists sometimes get emptied because of cancellations. I would do it.
  • I did this show the first year and did fair but this year my sales were actually better than expected. We did the Columbus Art Show and had a great show the weekend before so my inventory was limited but we still did very well. I agree with Lori, Saturday was a let down, the parking lot was packed all day but limited crowds but Sunday was exactly the opposite, great crowds and equally great sales!! I would put this on my list for next year ....
  • How wonderful to hear of a great show with great results for all (so far!)
  • yes--you're absolutely right, Deborah!  My neighbor who sold beautiful ink paintings (we traded pieces!) thought most of her customers were there just for the show...
  • Dont' know about the mall shoppers vs show shoppers however I have never heard so many people calling others to come to "The Art Show at The Summit".  Thought that said a lot for the quality of the show.
  • I'm checking the CallsforArtists link, Connie--thanks!  Is there any point in contacting shows whose deadlines have passed?

  • I wish there was a way of knowing how many people were there specifically for the Art Show, or "stumbled" upon it while shopping at one of Louisville's most popular malls?  I saw many people carrying JCrew, etc bags!
  • This was my second year to do this show and both years have been great for me.  I had repeat customers as well as connecting with new ones.  I also had all of my sales on Sunday.  I found Sunday morning was good, then traffic kind of lagged midday and was hopping my mid-afternoon.  I concur about load in/load out...one of the easiest shows I've done.  Although there were half the number of artists this year as last year, the quality was consistently higher I believe.  I had a number of customers ask if I did the St James show ( I don't).  Don't know if that means they are doing advance scouting for St James or not.  Regardless, I'll be back.
