Testing Our Resolve

It's been a topsy turvy year, didn't get into 2 out of the 4 shows we normally start the year with, but had terrific sales at the 2 we got into, way above last year so we were doing okay.  May shows had one way up, one way down.  Our first June show was a horrible disappointment and then we went into our show this past weekend absolutely, 100% sure this was the last time we were EVER doing this street fair.  On the drive there to set up, as we were grumbling about being forced to fight heavy traffic on a Friday night to get there for our load in time, we were so happy to think that it was our last time for this event.

LOL, we had the best show we've had in 5 years of doing that show including selling a couple of very unique "one of a kind" pieces.   2 out of our 3 best sales of the entire weekend came in the last hour of the show, once again proving that it's not over until it's over!!  We laughed about it on the way home, still thinking we are sticking to our resolution to never do this show again but it was nice to end it on a high note!!

Then we had a friend ask us today, are you sure you're not doing that show again?? Just wondering how many others have had second thoughts after swearing off a particular show or event.

  • How funny!  I'm loving reading about the Pacific Northwest.  Makes me really feel like and insider!!!  Somehow the nudist colony booth doesn't surprise me!! I lived above Bartell's Drug Store on University Way, and always had a group of "unusual" people on the corners below me, either dancing and jingling bells in front of the bank or hanging out waiting for the bus.  Of course that was back in the hippy days!
  • LOL, now you know one reason we don't like doing the Fremont Fair!  You never know who your neighbors will be and whether they will detract from your sales.

We should see you Sunday at Bothell Live Arts, we're planning to "walk the show"  to check it out for a potential show for next year.  We're going to be in Kenmore for a belated Father's day  dinner with my Dad and his wife at their home so we figured we might as well make the slight detour to Bothell on the way to Kenmore!!

  • Hi Ruth,

Edmonds was pretty bad this year, so you made the right choice, I'm thinkin'. Sales from artist to artist can vary so much, it makes my head spin. But in general, people just weren't buying at Edmonds. It wasn't just the (perpetual) rain this year, even on Sunday with big crowds there were no packages going by. I did about half of what I did at any show last year. and I talked to several people who barely broke even or worse. I'm hoping we get a little stretch of sun pretty soon to pick up shoppers spirits.

Glad to hear that Fremont was a good show for you! A glassblower friend was also there, across from the local nudist colony's booth. The rumor is that if it gets hot, the people manning the booth take off their clothes. He went on to say that he prayed for rain all weekend. Hmmmm... wonder who was manning the booth?

  • Thanks Kathleen, and yes, the mountain in my picture is Mt. Rainier, as seen from my back deck.  We love coming home to that view after our road trips!!

  • Ruth, I thought I recognized the mountain in your picture!  I used to live in the Fremont area, back in the dinosaur days.  Thanks for the reminder of that time, and I'm glad, too that you had a good show.
  • Nels - it's a street fair in Seattle called the Fremont Fair.  We've not been able to get aceepted into the good art show that is the same weekend here in the Puget Sound and while we've done okay, it's never been great.  However, we also get to the point where we need at least some income coming in so we kept doing it for the last 5 years now.

Our plan for 2012 is to not be in Seattle for May / June but maybe head to California to try a few shows and enjoy some sunshine instead of Seattle's drizzle that plaugued us on Saturday.

  • If I'd had a really good year, I have to admit I'd be tempted to return!  But I'd do the figures first - one good year out of five might not make the cut .
  • Just curious.  What show were you doing all this at?
  • Sorry this year has been so "topsy turvy"...but happy to hear that you have had some very important sales.  Hope the rest of the year is "way up"
