After spending a delightful day with my son on the eve before his 30th birthday, and my dear hubby, at our favorite Sushi/Chinese Restaurant (Jimmy Chen's Hunan's Restraurant, Alpena, Michigan), my son held his mom's hand and guided (more like drug me) into the world of the internet and building webpages. Arrrrrggggg!!!

I tried to avoid it, but he persisted in nagging me until I finally relented and I now have a webpage. It has very little on it at the moment and will be another 24-48 hours before it's viewable by the general public, but I am now an official website. When it becomes operational (waiting for the webhost to finish loading it) the web site will be drakesneststudio.com! This is a scary step for me as I felt that it was too soon for a web page and that word of mouth, business cards and flyers would work for the time being. WRONG!! Dear son said I needed a web page even if I had nothing more than photo's to show that getting people curious about me and what I do is a big step in to getting them to come back for more and if they like what they see, then I have potential customers or my name gets passed along to someone else who may want to order something.

So if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go faint and take a deep breath before I start fooling with the web page again. This is going to be a loooooooonggggg project, I can see that now. Hopefully, it will be worth the effort.

  • I love hearing these stories. Power to the Gen X and Y's! For some reason it seems like people are afraid to break down the brick wall between computers and "the way things are now are just fine" mentality. The fact of the matter is the harder people resist change the harder it will be for them to adjust as years go on because technology is reinventing itself at lightning speed. But what most people don't realize is you can learn about computers, the internet and all the terms and such at your own pace - it doesn't have to happen over night. However once folks make the leap they ask find how valuable the info is - from finding a favorite recipe from your favorite restaurant to promoting your work FOR FREE all through the power of computers and the internet. Good luck on your adventure - there are plenty of people here that can help you with questions too! - Michelle, www.bythebaybotanicals.com and www.quickcraftartisttips.blogspot.com
  • Oh, btw, Terri, how old do you think I was when I went into this web publishing?? Plenty old! Both of my sites are templates. This one right here is through Ning.com. Its purpose is community building, so wouldn't work for your purposes. (My son told me about it) But my main site, ArtFairCalendar.com, is a Typepad.com site -- totally a template and WYSIWIG -- meaning I can type in what I want and don't have to do html. So as long as you can read and write and type any one of us can build a website. Cool, isn't it? Still can't figure out why people have others building their simple sites for them. That means every time you want to change a price, an image, talk about something, you have to contact that other person. Me, just like what I'm doing right here talking to you, I go to another page and fix up my site. This is important because I am updating constantly, a tweak here and a tweak there.
  • Hey Guys, I was confused earlier when I read your post, Terri, I thought you were starting a blog. Which, btw, are unbelievably informative, instructive and encouraging. I agree with Connie, everyone should have some kind of page. Mine is less than delightful but it is a splash page, as Connie says and we can grow from here!
  • Hi Connie. When I signed up with Vista Print, it automatically provided me with the web address I wanted. http://www.PinsAndPoetry.com I didn't have to purchase my domain seperately or fill out the paperwork for one, as it was a package deal. Will have to call them and find out what's what cause I sure would like to change. I put your son's site in my favorite places. Thanx!
  • Guess why I started this site, Terry? Because my son said I had to. Guess why I started ArtFairCalendar.com? Because my son said I had to, so welcome to the club.

Theresa -- dump Vistaprint -- it is your url, not theirs. If you are unhappy with their service take your url and run! A good place to get advice on what to do about a website is actually my son's blog, www.scottfoxblog.com. Take a look around. There is a lot of sound free advice there. His specialty is small business online marketing.

Terri, the sooner you have your domain name registered and even a holding page online for your site the sooner you will get indexed by Google. It is surely beyond me why every artist doesn't have at least a splash page with an image of their work, a description of it (for key words) and their show schedule. Sure maybe you only want to sell at shows, but wouldn't it be great if people could find out if you are coming to their neighborhood?

You can also ask questions about this in our web wizards group. There are some very knowledgeable people there.
  • Thanks for the kinds words about jumping into the 21st Century , think I'm way long over due for that. I was born in the WRONG century in that I like the old fashion ways. I went to Godaddy.com to purchase the website/domain and am using their website builder websitetonight.com. I have a 3 year contract on the domain/website and SSL Certificate. After that time, I can move my domain to another website. I didn't use Vista due to the cost involved and being limited in what you can do. With my site, I can use what they refer to as a clean slate - totally flexible, one with backgrounds you select or templates. I have the option of using or not using those things. Once I get enough product I will do shows, but need to also get my studio completed in order to do that, just don't have the room in the house. Will let you know how it goes. But thanks for the encouragement. Trying ones wings for the first time can be a very scary experience when you're in your 60's.
  • What webhost are you using? Are you using templates or is someone helping you to learn HTML ? I have a website built by someone I pay, and am not quite happy with it. The other website I have, I use a template, and very unhappy (vista print) with that but now I don't want to change my web address.
Don't forget to add your show schedule on your website. I have lots of people that come to my website just to find out where I will be next so they can come and buy from me in person.
    Best of luck Terri.
  • Dear Terri,

I am so proud of you for taking this step. Our children are correct in guiding us to take the leap. I would love the carthric nature of a blog but have not pulled the trigger. I will watch you and maybe I, too, will be brave and adventuresome and join the 21st CENTURY.
