Sawgrass Village @ Ponte Vedra

Has anyone heard what happened to this event? I heard nothing but kudos and thought I'd love to give it a whirl. Since I couldn't find an application for anything more current than 2009 I e-mailed the promoter (Venues). No response, site not updated since 2009. I called and left a message, and although it is still a working number, no reply. So, I called the Chamber of Commerce in Ponte Vedra. They've never heard of it, have no information. Now, I'm curious.

Did this once great event simply disappear? Any decent Jacksonville area shows to recommend?

  • We got responses (that was a little while ago)whenever we called venues....they should get back....Yeah,pretty much just HA. As for St. Augustine have you tried the art assoc. in Fall & Spring(thanksg/Easter)heard it can be good?Just wondering-Where do you think is the best spot for a show up here for promoters to look at...Ponte Vedra?

  • Well, the unfortunate fact is that Venues doesn't answer e-mails or phone messages, so I have to assume that they no longer promote area shows.  After an exhaustive search, I can only find TNT, church-type events, or RAM.  Of course, there's HA, but that's a whole different story and actually only two events in the Jax area.  St. Augustine isn't any better, and north there's only Glynn Art events in Georgia that I can find.

So, basically I guess the answer is that No, Northeast Florida doesn't have much in the way to offer.  Again, perhaps this thread will be a heads up to promoters in the area that there are quality artists seeking a venue. . .

  • Heard Ponte Vedra is on break because of area renovations.(think Venues Planning does it now.)TNT usually has small turnouts,(artists & attendees)-we heard.

  • I absolutely agree that the Jax area seriously needs some quality events -- unfortunately for artists I'm not sure HA is the answer. Too many of us avoid his shows for a variety of reasons leaving us with the alternatives of doing nothing in the area or compromising/caving in and going the HA route. Perhaps this thread will be a heads up to promoters in the area that there are quality artists looking for a venue. . .

In the meantime I've run across a TNT event nearby -- maybe a new thread would garner more info -- but has anyone had experience with these folks?
  • Howard Allen events left sawgrass-unfortunately- other folks continued- and nothing exists now- It was never "great' - fair at best and I live in jax.// Old mandarin had prizes and sales/// BUT URBAN SPRAWL-- no parking- bad shuttles-no crowds,sales// have H. Allen Promoting Mandarin hopefully back to health- his San Marco is really the only game in town-- Thanks Howard- Jacksonville needs-
  • As for Mandarin, before HA, the community did buy. I did it twice several years ago and it was wonderful. Second time I had a death in the family and had to leave Sat. night but had done in one day what I usually do the whole weekend. Hated to leave. When I found out HA took over I was disappointed to see it and told the committee chair so. The only reason I applied and was so happy to get in was from the good reviews I had heard from other artists who had done the shows in the past. I don't know how they did last year.
  • Well, there is a show in Mandarin Easter weekend that used to be run by the Mandarin Community Center. Last year rumor has it that they couldn't get volunteer support and for whatever reason turned it over to HA. Booth fee increased from $125 to $350, and the event was revamped. Neighborhood artists were absent (revolting against the increase in fee? Maybe not accepted by HA?). Locals weren't thrilled, but HA does bring in attendees . . . and has a strong artist following. I've never done the show but have walked it in the past (as in before HA), and it did have huge community participation. Don't know if they actually buy.

Other than that I guess I'll try RAM.
  • It was a really great show however the promoters were terribly disorganized. Setup was first going to be at 7:30PM, then 9:30PM, then 11PM. I suspect they upset the retailers in the shopping center we were in because they were running around making people who had started to set up take down because we were using parking spaces. Last I heard they sent out a questionnaire about choosing a new location. Nothing since then. It is a shame. It is the only Jacksonville show that ever worked out for me.

I did the San Marco show back when it was run by the thankfully now defunct J&Co. It was really awful and I suspect some of it was not due to the poor promotion. However it also rained all weekend. It is the one show that I really wish I had looked out the window on Sat. morning and said, let's go home. It is now run by Howard Alan and might be worth a shot.
