Rising shows

Every year brings new art fairs for us to participate in. Every year makes great shows turn into stinkers. Every year formerly average shows start to shine. You know guys, one of the reasons you are so hooked on this business is the essential gambling you are doing here, week to week. It is the artist's version of "playing the market".

I watch pretty closely for new shows and/or shows turning the corner and am so saddened when a good show goes wrong. Will you step up and share some thoughts on shows that you think are particularly well run and are "rising"? You know they are out there.

This can be in any category:
--the biggies
--the mid size shows
-- the volunteer run events
-- the museum shows
-- local fine art & craft shows

Through the year all kinds of shows get reviewed on this site that I've never heard of. Can you share your favorites, the places where is is more or less safe for an artist to put down their money?

  • Seems like the best info I've gotten on rising shows has been in the show blogs. Most artists I know in this tough economy keep rising shows under their hat so they can get in again.

I wouldn't imagine any of the long established shows would fit under this "theme" unless they are under new management and rising from the ashes.
  • And I can give you 6t artists that did over 10// well thats 12 out of 195-crummy survey- it just is these days--Remember we compete with the BEST mass marketer in the World- DISNEY- same dollars walking by-- FEW REALLY COME FOR THE ART FESTIVAL
  • Well, the potter next to me had a sale on sunday because his mother bought something. The guy next to me did next to nothing. Two jewelers i know said it was very bad. A leather worker i know said it was way,way off, so i guess it depends on who you talked to. An award would take some of the bite out poor sales but only a certain number of people had that happen. Count yourself lucky. A fair number of people did zip.
  • Phil- I disagree on Disney-please see my recent posts-even if you won an award you could have a good show-
  • I would add the Disney Festival of the Masters to the roster of shows on a serious decline. Lack of promotion is probably the culprit here. It used to be the top fall show in Florida but now is one of the worst.
  • When did Charlevoix Chamber get a fine art juried show? Please. Unless you call grape vine bird feeders and chainsaw bears fine art. Let's not confuse the chamber of commerce shows with the one day show the arts council puts on in Aug.
  • There are two shows in my area that are good for me from year to year. Charlevoix Summer Solstice Art fair put on by the Charlevoix,Mi Chamber. This is a juried fine art show in norther lower Michigan held the last weekend in June. The chamber does a great job of setting this show up and taking care of the artist. The set up can be a little tricky as the park is terreced and the artist has to move their stuff down the hill for setup and back up when done. The park is right on the main highway and this is tourist country. Contact Shelly at the Chamber for more information. A side note: The chamber runs several arts and craft shows at this same park through the summer to.

The second juried fine art show is Portside Art Fair in East Jorden, MI held the first weekend in Aug. This fair is about 18 miles from Charlevoix . This show is the annual fund raiser for the park that the show is held in. The show is well attended and juried, so you won't see any buy and sell here. Load in is first come first served, but load out is well organized as all of the artist have one drive way to work with. They require you to get all of your stuff to the drive before they will let you get in line to pick it up. Its not the best, but they do keep the park and then pack people at bay.
