So, if you aren't from Florida, too bad.
The Gainesville show Nov. 6 and 7 had one big strike against it, Mother Nature. Temps in the mid to upper 30's to start both days kept some of the customers away, but after the warm up what was the excuse?
Anyway, the organizers and volunteers made the fair work well and made us feel welcome. Sales were not consistent and the crowd never really built to the 'buying frenzy' stage we all wish for. Set-up and tear down pretty easy as the streets are wide. One complaint: the porta johns should have been on the street corners IN the fair site.
Homosassa, Nov 13-14, on the nature coast is a fun show because everyone is happy to be there with their hands closed around their money in their pockets where they stayed. We like Fla, but may visit without spending art fair fees next time.

  • Last year I was in the crafts section at Homosassa, due to a friend in there that wanted company and I did not do jury fee. This year I was in art section and my sales were down by 350! The crafters are in the shade too. I spoke with the ones I was next to last year and their sales were better than last year..in the crafts section. Shade and food and beer wine. People want to get out of the blinding sun. I was in a ditch this year that ran through my booth..I have clay, ceramic..not a good combo with uneven ground. I had to warn everyone coming in not to fall in the ditch. Caused a bad unplanned set up. Judge was nice..the ONLY judge. There should be 3 for every show. If I do it again, I will move to the crafts section where it is cooler and more patrons. I do not know what you were selling, but when you work with clay and they set 6 other clay artists around you, not spread out, but next door and across, it is not a well planned out show. There was also a woman next to me selling buy/sell amber rings and pendants not fair for the true jewelry artists.
  • Mark sorry to hear Homosassa didn't go well for you. I had a pretty good show. Thought the show was well organized. The judge was friendly, came around to each booth, asked questions. Easy pack in & out. This was only my 3rd show ever, so I don't have a lot to go on, but I did better in Homosassa than at lake Mary/Heathrow. Much bigger crowds, especially on Saturday.
