Plantation Art in the Park (Florida)

I participated in this show for the second time. It is held in a beautiful park in Ft. Lauderdale and the weather was perfect. Load in and out is very difficult, having to dolly in on cobblestones. There were no working lights in the park so we had to load out in the dark, causing some safety issues.

I never saw the judges and was shocked at the prizes ($) awarded to buy/sell, while obvious one of a kind art was ignored. No one I spoke with saw anyone judging. No check marks or stickers were put on the booth signs to identify that we had been judged!

There were some incidents that occured that I've never seen or heard about at any other shows.

The show committee works very hard and seems to want to improve the show in the future.

I would like to hear the viewpoints of some of the other participants.

  • I used to live in Weston FL, right next to Plantation. I had a Children's boutique where I used to sell my art, hand painted furniture, murals, etc. Moms were more interested in designer jeans for kids. There's a lack of interest for art in these suburbs. I started incorporating clothing, shoes and accessories for kids and jewelry for moms and teens and my business took off. Moms don't care about art and they had the money to spend on it. They just cared about having the latest sports car or SUV and the latest Chanel or Hermes bag. They will hire designers to do their kids rooms and will go to the design District to get their furniture there. Never supported local artists and  when there was art shows in all these suburbs around us it was a fiasco.I got disappointed and stop doing shows in FL My good clients were from the Midwest, because I had the same business years before in Chicago and I still keep in touch with them after 8 years. Now I'm back in CHicago and in 3 months my art business has been very active and I can't wait to start the shows in couple weeks, exciting!! That was my experience.
  • I did Art in the Park. I was unaware of the judging, as well. It's true that the unloading/loading is very difficult, especially since it gets dark so early these days and the lighting was inadequate. But, unlike the other commentors, I did surprisingly well with my jewelry. Because of the poor economy, I lowered my prices a bit and sold quite a lot. People were looking for gifts. I did a lot better than last year. I intend to return next year.
  • We forgot to mention the very loud music being played on each end of the show. I do believe
this could be a better show,Saturday is family day just made my booth fee . I did sell 3 larger paintings on Sunday and several small ones, it was a different crowd on Sunday there were customers out to purchase art and seemed just upset with the amount of buy/sell as the artist.
  • Lisa, did you notice that two of the Porta potties were everflowing and running into the pavement where we wer trying to load out cars in darkness.
Sometimes I wonder about my sanity when conditions like this occur.
I will be doing a first time show this week end in Coconut Grove. I'm holding my breath and praying for a much better experience!
  • I also exhibited at this show for the first time and agree with all of the above, and more
the show did not provide a list of exhibitors for customers, the food vendors were allowed to drive on grass at end of show, no artist were allowed. the worst experience of the show was having to park your van in front of the Porto pottys to load out there was really no other place to park in my area a true health hazard!
  • I'd did this show in 03-07. In 05 they changed the dated to Dec. because of hurricanes in Oct. I always did ok but the set up was hard with a long dolly to the inner part of the park. In 07 they gave awards to buy/sell and the quality had gone downhill. Many of us there that year spoke among ourselves and agreed we couldn't support a show that gave buy/sell awards. I have never gone back. The next year 08 they did not even hold the show. Sounds like 2010 was just a repeat of 08 and they didn't learn anything from they're past mistakes.
  • I also attended this show. My experience was similar. I was very disappointed with the show. I will not be attending next year.
