Well, our first weekend using the Square was somewhat anti climatic. Sales were very slow so we only did 4 transactions with it. It was easy to use and worked just fine on our IPad. Some of our neighbors had used it for some time and all liked it over other methods. The one thing that occurred was 3 out our 4 transactions declined the email or text recipes option so we had to hand write them a receipt. This is an issue I have brought up after speaking with another user who had only 1 patron provide the email out of the whole weekends sales, having had to write receipts for the rest. On the other hand, some folks tell us that almost everyone has given the email. I think Square needs to come up with a compatible, portable printer to print receipts. Have given them feedback on that already. Deposits were right on time in our bank as well. All in all it was good except for the receipt thing.
I just got the Square and I like the convenience of being able to plug it into both my iphone & ipad without having to take them out of their protective cases. I am doing a show in Houston this weekend and hope to give it a good workout.
I have an Intuit GoPayment card reader and also just ordered a Square. I like the Intuit...however the app for my Iphone has one feature i do not like...I must log in each time after closing the app and this can be frustrating when buisy. The Square app keeps you logged in until you log out...even when you close the app.
I just bought an Ipad and have downloaded the app on it also....alot eassier on the eyes than that itty bitty screen of my iphone.
Has anyone ever hooked up their Square using a short 3.5mm extension wire as opposed to plugging it in directly? My protective case for the phone and Ipad has to be removed in order to get a connection with just the Square. I would prefer to keep the case on and use a short extension wire for the Square or Intuit.
I am leaving Wednesday for a show in Houston and need to get a cable to try this method.
JoAnne - there is no store and later transmission option, but that is one of the upsides of a square - no customer information is stored on your device. If you didn't have a signal, you could record the information and manually key it later when you did have a signal. You'd pay a higher rate.
Ray - I've had one charge back. Square told me, took the money back and asked me for any additional information I had. I told them where the purchase was made, exact date and time (because of the email you get from square), my inventory number (included in the email because I entered it in the description), price and a description of what the customer purchased. Took approx 30 business days, but I did get the money back. I asked, but Square didn't say what the dispute was.
I have never had a charge back from Square and would be interested in knowing if anyone has. The system seems bulletproof as far as customers not remembering the purchase. When they sign the screen, that signature goes into the Square system so there is no need for Square to request a signed receipt from the merchant as is the case with the paper receipts that we used to collect. Also, it is possible to attach a photo to the receipt that is emailed to the customer. That could be a photo of the artist, a photo of your booth, or even a photograph of the piece purchased. Additionally with a map of the purchase location on the receipt, all this should mostly eliminate charge backs.
I've been thinking about getting the square, but wondering what happens if you're in an area where you can't get a strong connection? will it store the transaction for later transmission? I have a (larger) cellular device that does and have had to use this feature a few times at shows, and also I live in the boonies and can't get usually get a signal from my home, but can if I drive 5 miles or so to where I can get a (sprint) connection for those mail-order or after-the-show calls about a making a purchase.
I'm a tech dummy. I just got the Square and have emailed a receipt to myself as a test run; however, I have never used text messaging. How do you do it with The Square for a receipt? Please don't assume I know anything electronic.

John K. that's a great way to capture the person's e-mail address! I also still use paper receipts for all transactions.
