By state I do not mean... as in state of disarray. Is it just me or do other artists find themselves scouring webpages and applications to find out what state some of these shows are in? I just recieved an art show application for a show in Forest Park. Where is Forest Park? Perhaps, if I read it again slowly I will find the information. I realize that I can google the Forest Park chamber and name of the show and eventually figure this out, but am I whining too much by saying that it should not be that difficult? Show promoters would be wise to list the city and state right up front. So please, any show promoters out there reading this blog... go check... can the artist see, immediatly, where your show is if the artist reading the application is from out of the area?
Boy, I agree with this! Even with Zapplication, you have to glean this information out as to "where" these shows are! Folks, your art show isn't as well known as you think! Put down your location under your dates, PLEASE!!!!!
Go to zapplciation, set up an account. It is easy to do and there is no charge. Go to the search for shows tab and you can search by region or state.... good luck! You might also visit with other artists in the area to find out if there is a show listing magizine that is popular with artists in your area. Another good resourse, but a bit more of a investment, is the art fair sourcebook which tells you everything you need to know about the top shows in the country. You can purchase it by the region or entire country. You can purchase listing by top tier or next 100 best shows. It is now exclusively on line although they may have some older print editions still available. They will not only tell you where the shows are located, but expected revenue, odds of getting in, set up take down etc.... pretty much everything you need to know about the shows they list.
Have to agree with you Ray. I wish they would also list the app deadline and show date on the summary page. I usually sort by state, but then have to click on each one to record the app date and show date. Peggy... guess the IL Forest Park app wasn't the only one not to list state in the email last week!
I have complained to Zapp about this also. Click on the list of participating shows and you will have no idea where many of these shows are located unless the city and state is part of the show name. They have started including city and state in the weekly notifications to artists, but not on the lists within their site.
Yep. I've written applications and been guilty of this. All I can say in defense is that the organizer is so focused on their event, lots of things get assumed. But this is a good point.
My very favorite one was several years ago (before all the applications went online and art fairs shelled out big bucks for fancy glossy applications) a beautiful application arrived in the mail with all the details. It was beautiful. What did they leave out? THE DATE! This was Arti Gras. Sigh.
Thanks for bringing that up. We get all kinds of mystery invitations that sound great, but we have no idea where they are. No, you're not imagining things.
Along that line, we have found that we have problems getting addresses from art shows (some of them quite prestigious) to punch into the GPS. Trying to punch in intersections has a surprisingly high failure rate, especially when it's something like "East U.S. 295" Do you abbreviate? Do you leave out the periods in U.S.? Do you use spaces? A solid street address, even if it's for a business on one of the streets in the show, would be a great help.
Thanks for that... I sound like a grumpy artist and did not mean to pick on the Forest Park people... it is just a good idea in general to make all of the important info obvious .
