OK, so im new at selling paintings and I don't know where to start. Im 21, attend Penn State and love to draw and paint. The problem is that I dont know who to talk to or where to go to put my paintings on the market. Can anyone tell me how to showcase my artwork, put them in art shows and fairs, and sell them in a timely fashion?

Thank You,

Michael Crawford

  • Purchase a copy of Sunshine Artist Magazine from your local art store.  If they don't carry it, have them special order it.  Or call them 1-800-597-2573 and ask them if they will send you - for a small fee - a copy.  The back pages have art show info from all over the US, by date.  Maybe there is an art show in your area coming up soon.  If you think this is the venue for you to sell your work - welcome to our world!

But whatever you do, check out an arts festival as soon as possible.  Most of the applications for shows this year are already past deadline.  You also have to put together inventory, a display apparatus, etc., etc.  And you really have to like talking to people about buying your art!

  • Michael's got a good suggestion about the State College festival. You might also want to visit Mt. Gretna this summer (outside of Harrisburg).  If you're serious about selling art at OUTDOOR festivals, then visit all the outdoor festivals you can.  Watch, pay attention, and (when exhibitors aren't talking with customers) introduce yourself.  Good luck to you! It is great to have young artists come into the art show world.
  • You say you go to Penn State - have you ever visited the Arts Festival that is held there each July?

  • Try reading just about everything on this website.  It will give you all kinds of insight into the art fair world.  Then if you think it is for you, do what Judy said.  Good luck.
