Mt. Gretna beat me up!

I am exhausted, this weekend beat me up! During set-up on Friday there was bad weather pending so we set up in record time, the rain started just as we were walking to our car….phew. Lugging the art on my hand truck on the grassy tree-rooted hill was a struggle and quite a workout. Saturday’s weather was beautiful as well as part of Sunday. However, Sunday afternoon all the artists had their phones turned to the weather center and a HUGE  storm cell was coming, we just didn’t know when.  The show was officially over at 5pm, but around 3;30 several artists started bringing in the art off the outer walls and closing down the sides, thankfully I was one of them……nothing got ruined. About 3:45, thunder and lightning started and then 5 minutes later the Heavens opened up. I was one of the lucky ones that had 4 bays of hay to put in front of my booth to prevent the flowing rain and mud from coming into my booth, remember this show was at MT Gretna. We frantically put my livelihood in  their boxes  up off the ground and proceeded to take down everything except the canopy, which  gave us shelter. Now, if you think about this for a moment, Lightning is all around us in the park as we the artists are standing in our 10′ x 10′ Metal Tents under Large Trees waiting til 5pm for the show promoters to let us bring our vans onto the streets……Not a smart thing. Once we got the okay, we walked 1/4 to a 1/2 mile in the downpour to get our vans. Needless to say, I was soaking wet, but I actually received a few compliments saying I looked good with my hair all wet, however the black eyes from the mascara was not a good look. I’m glad I have friends who said, “Aw, Beth wipe your eyes”, which was immediately followed by “How do I look, do I have mascara all over too?” Now, with mud soaked grass and light rain,we pushed our loaded down  hand truck up the hill. This was extremely difficult and took two of us to manage. By the time everything was loaded in the van, I was beat, I couldn’t tell what was sweat or rain all over my body with mud splatter all over my legs up to my shorts. When we got home we unloaded the art and then ate our Wawa hoagies. After dinner I could hardly walk up the 13 steps to get a shower, so I took a short cut and  just washed the mud off of my legs and then crashed into bed. This Monday morning I did absolutely nothing except lay on the couch. I am going to make Tilapia for dinner……who am I kidding, I am going to ask my husband if we can get a pizza.

  • It seemed alot of us first timers at the show had an overall Good experience and will be back next year.
  • My first time at Mt Gretna, did very well, seems that is the case for 1st time shows for me.  And it won't be the last time I dolly out in pouring rain.  It's good for your hair.  Thank you Mt Gretna, you have restored my faith in shows.  Had a great time with friends and show neighbors too.
  • I had a good time at Mt Gretna.  During setup, I got my tent up in time to shelter from the rain, though it was luckily no more than a sprinkle.  This was my first year, and I was very lucky to get a spot on Carnegie near the entrance (on pavement!) where the buses let off.  I hope to be back next year, in the same spot!  My neighboring artist were very nice, too, and in general I thought the quality of work offered was excellent.  There was one 'blacksmith' welded metal that I suspected of buy and sell - just too many identical very cheap garden tripods for sale, but perhaps I am being uncharitable.  Traffic was good, but I would have liked to make more sales, of course, like every artist.   Take-down was an event with the storm- lots of rain and thunder, but fortunately no wind.    I took it easy and just packed my tent up from the inside.  This is the third rainy packup I have had in a row, so I have learned from unfortunate experience.  It never stopped raining, except for the 20 minutes it took me to walk up the hill to my van.   I changed out of my soggy clothes in the car.  Mt Gretna is a wonderful venue, really beautiful, and has some of the best fair food I have ever eaten.
  • The show is attended by locals and they know where all the spaces are because they attend every year.

  • Larry, How nice to be able to stay in Mt Gretna during the show. Since this was my first year, after parking my van in the field and walking back to my booth I was wondering if the customers know the show is under the trees  or do they get overwhelmed with the amount of vendors in the field that they are too tired to venture over to the fine art show? I thought the crowds were good and they like to come out early.
  • Some Mt Gretna Tips
The best parking is on the street across from the show. But the spaces go really fast during Friday setup and those vehicles don't move until the show is over. Spaces on the roads or in the fenced in area to the left of the main entrance are a lot less wear and tear on your body and are easier for dollying. Whenever I've done the show, I've gotten there early Friday morning and parked on the road. I also stay with friends who live in Mt Gretna (and do the show) so I don't have to move my vehicle.

By the way, the field where the other show is used to be the artist (and public) parking until the owner found out he could make more money selling 10x10 spaces.

  • There are two shows that go on that same weekend right across the street from each other.  One is a Summer Craft Market in a field, there's food, mostly handmade items, some buy/sell.  Across the street is the Art Show under trees and along winding paths.  I only saw the craft show a few years ago - but was able to peek into the Art show while waiting for the shuttle bus to take us back to the parking lot.  The quality was top notch.  I haven't applied to it yet, but it's on my try-to-do list.
  • Geoff, I didn't get a chance to walk the show but what I did see on the way to the restrooms was a good variety of mediums. Since I am a painter I tend to only look at the Fine Art and I what I saw was very good  as well as glass and sculpture . As for the craft mediums, I usually walk on by unless I see unique wood designs. I thought Mt Gretna was lovely and I wouldn't mind owning one of those cottages.
  • Mike, I had everything in the van at 6pm. I was scrambling because I felt there was another wave of the lightning and downpours coming through. My sales were good, not great, but I did expect more. I too was a first timer at the show and I was wondering if they put all the Newbies in the rows and not along the main path? Even with all the weather problems, I will go back as well.

  • I love Mt. Gretna (I spent lots of time there with a girlfriend a few years back).  Is it more of a fine craft (or country craft) show, or more fine art?
