Harvest Festival

I just received an email from Harvest Festival about a tour of nine, three-day, indoor (and optional outdoor) shows on the West Coast starting Sept. 9-11 through Dec. 2-4. Booth fees range from $600-775 (expensive) depending on whether you exhibit indoors or outdoors. Eight of the nine shows are in California. One in Las Vegas. Has anyone done any of the Harvest shows? Any recommendations? I exhibit 2-D fine art. Could be that these shows attract lots of buy-sell and low end craft. I'm a midwest artist and never exhibited on the West Coast but a tour of California in the fall has got me thinking...

  • Del Mar is not the same as La Jolla, except in poor sales.  A friend of mine moved out there several years ago and using her art show experience (as a art show junkie, not an artist), she visited La Jolla and thought the quality was not very good and what was selling was low end.  Best stay east of the Mississippi!  Or at least the Rocky Mtns.
  • you said del mar   is that the la jolla show  which i am doing,   i stay away from fountain hills ( mostly buy/sell)  and Morgan does not care.   i stopped doing tucson about 4 years ago  that is all schlock, which is the same in litchfield.   if one is going to do 2 D  in AZ  may want to try the carefree shows with thunderbird artist.  But to drive from MI  stay home for find something local.
  • They charge ( not sure) $9 to get in and I think it was $7 to park. May not be exact,  but people do it by the carload. It was very well attended
  • PS I do glass art and jewelry and Judaica in glass.
  • I did the Del Marr show last year and will not go back. Between the travel, the high cost of the booth, the chrage just to park your RV and most of all, almost no art at all. Food, food, food, chachkas, dressing up in haloween gard, costumes and low end everything, I just about broke even. That being said, the people are very nice, it is mobbed and people come with suitcases to fill, and they do spend, they just spend on low end items. The music is great outside and the gourmet foods are nice. But I live in Tucson and do most of the Arizona shows ( 4th Ave, Fountain Hills Litchfield etc) and they are all better than Del Mar. Hope this helps. :)
  • Thanks to Steve and Michael for the info. I'm from Saugatuck, Michigan. Although a California trip would give me a good excuse to visit (and stay with) my nephew and his family, I'll take a pass on the California shows this year. With gas prices as they are, its best to stay close to home and minimize travel when possible.
  • Step away from that temptation!  Yes, they're mostly just a craft show, so you could be set up next to dough art, christmas ornaments, corncob pipes, train whistles - do you see where this is going?  Also, you may have to bring your own hay bales to decorate your booth.  Is this getting better for you?

If you really want to hit the West Coast, Sausalito is the best show to do, but the apps. are closed for this year.  San Diego has a show in Old Town, I think it's still open.  Just remember, the economy in CA and OR is in the pits and people, if they buy, it's low end.

That being said, the Beverly Hills Affaire in the Gardens is closed for its May show, but it has an Oct. show.  Depending on where you're coming from (please, put in your home city when asking for show info!), it's a long drive, with no other shows to pair with it.

Do not even think of NV shows, the economy there is even worse than on the West Coast (Las Vegas is No. 1 in foreclosures in the nation - please do your homework!).  The Boulder City shows, just outside Las Vegas are known for jamming in 600 or more artists into two or more parks.  Avoid!

  • i do not want to disappoint you but i went as a buyer several years ago and it is more of a craft show.  Heard from people at a show in boulder city nv that the vegas show was a good show.  but as i said it is more of a craft show.
