I am a grown woman and know better. At the very least if I accept a beer from a stranger I make sure the beer is opened infront of me. This festival kept their artist calm by keeping us tipsy with free drinks thru out the show. It worked too until it was time to sober up. It wasn't pretty and actually had me in tears at the end and I am not a boo hoo cry baby. I held it together until the drive home and never raised my voice. My southern mom would be proud. Steel Magnolia till the end.

This was my year to try all juried outdoor shows ITP (inside the perimeter of Atlanta) if I was intown. I now know which ones I will do. Needless to say Candler Park is not one of them. I really don't feel there is a point going into more detail because it is all just plain bad all around, except for the weather and the Sweetwater. It was also great to meet other Artfair Insiders there. Thanks for stopping by and introducing yourselves.

  • laughing, in Michigan...
  • That is why Vodka is a wonderful alternative Michael. Less beer belching fumes and no purple lips. Plus when it is really hot and they have those frozen lemonade drinks, some vodka in that is AWESOME!!!
  • I know an artist who comes to the show each morning with a case (yeah, 24 cans, 24 hours - coincidence, I think not!) of beer. By the afternoon, his partner has to make an additional beer run, 'cause they ran out! My, I'd be on my face in the mud with that much beer in me. And he sells well, dang it! But I really believe the majority of the public doesn't want an artist burping beer fumes in their face or having purple lips from cheap wine. I save my drinking until after the show day is done - a good drink to celebrate (or commiserate) a done day. Nels - comments? suggestions? warnings?
  • Beverly it was the load out that was the final straw. Sales was the least of the problems by the end of the day or I should say late night into early the next morning.

I like your beer game idea.

Barry thanks for the suggestion of "Unlimited Power". Next time I am at a book store I will check it out. There is always more to be learned. I was kind of joking about the drinking part. I was selling hair extensions to dogs this weekend, seriously I was. So I am pretty good about getting that penny if there is a penny to be had;)
  • I'm new, but I have a friend who swears by having a few beers to increase sales - taking the edge off I'm sure. At Shrimp Festival, which has open drinking, my neighbor and I had a game going where we had a beer after the first sale or 2 pm, whichever came first. Maybe coincidence, but if the 2 pm beer came first, sales really picked up after that...

Melanie, sorry sales didn't get better. Plenty of people, just not buying and I don't understand the location they put you in. I'd like to see some of your experimental pieces.
  • I suggest you read Anthony Robbins book "Unlimited Power." He teaches you how to get into that "better selling state" without the beers.
  • Actually I don't care about food, drinks, t-shirts, artist party. I can bring my own cooler. Yes they are nice, but I would prefer them to lower booth fees and/ or put the money into advertising.
  • Anyone sell better when they have a couple drinks in them? I do!!! Normally I don't drink on break down day though. Since I breakdown by myself I worry I will drop the trimline on me or my neighbor if I have had a drink ;)
  • We vended at a particular wine festival years ago that had a free vendor buffet breakfast at a sit-down restaurant a block away. That was the only good thing about the show (next to zero sales), but it also kept us from complaining much. We've never been back, but still remember that breakfast.
  • Connie- Beverly Smith came by to say hello to me. It was great putting a face to a poster.

    Barry-

    Inman Park
    Virginia Highlands Summerfest
    Midtown Festival of the Arts
    Brookhaven Art Festival
    Chastain Art Festival

The first 3 are worth traveling for IMO. Brookhaven and Chastain are not. I don't think I will ever do anything in Piedmont Park again. They often talk about moving out of Piedmont Park, but even then I don't know if the Promoters can get the right crowd together. Buckhead Art Festival, (Spring) is in the same place and run by the same people as Chastain (Fall). I believe Buckhead is more of a craft show. They are both new shows so we will see.

As I said I have only done ITP. Some of the OTP (outside the perimeter) have tempted me, like Johns Creek, but they don't ever seem to cut it. Dunwoody was new this year. I have many friends there and they bought and I heard from artists they loved the show. This show is a "whimsical" show, so NOT my market. I may also try Marietta next year. I am having a VERY hard time believing they can get the $$ buying crowd in Marietta, but the feedback about this show is good. If anyone has more feedback about Marietta I would love to hear it. Like price points. For me to have a good show my pieces over $500 have to move and I don't mean just 1 ;)

FYI- I don't want to travel for a show unless I will do over 5k. I am willing to do a local show if I can do over 2k. Hope this helps people understand where I am coming from.
