Gasparilla

Toni Mann recently had some questions about Gasparilla 2011 and I was able to forward them to John Corso, one of the directors. The website did not appear to be updated, as is the case with many festivals between show dates, and I asked about it. Here is his response.

The updates to the website are taking place now and our title sponsor, Raymond James, it hoping to have all of the updates done by the end of the year. We were hoping for much sooner than that but we are at the mercy of them since they maintain our website for us. There will be detailed info as you request on the new, updated website. It will be more user-friendly with lots of info for our artists pertaining to set-up, maps, etc.
I will forward you thoughts to our board of directors as well. Have a great day!
John
One hopes that it will provide answers for those who have been accepted to the 2011 show.

It may help if the artists who will be in the show voice their questions and concerns now so they may be addressed in the updated site. I am not connected with the show in any way that woud be officially meaningful (I was REJECTED, for God's sake) but I can pass them on to likely listeners.

  • We plan to walk the show and see what it looks like. They have changed the layout from last year based on what they've learned.
..and Steve, thanks for your input. You have to consider the other side, too. If you can afford to do elitist art, then you should have a right to a venue where people who are forced to do it for a living won't contaminate the ambience. Folks like us need to know our place and leave people like Pat Whalen to do this show in peace.
  • Attention All You Gasparilla Rejectees: Here is a strategy for avoiding endless annual rejection from this fine show: Just don't apply. You reject them instead of them rejecting you! Freedom from rejection will be yours! Make yourself feel good by sending THEM a rejection notice, via Zapp of course! (OK, only kidding, calm down). But seriously, if you do art shows to make a living and therefore have to produce stuff that sells to pay your mortgage and health insurance and such, you sure ain't gonna win any of Gasparilla's generous prize money from one of those typical tormented academic art judges who can afford to be an art elitist thanks to a regular weekly paycheck. So here is what you need to do: Inherit a huge trust fund which will finance your producing really bizarre art that nobody can figure out, much less purchase. Take it to Gasparilla and win $10,000. Easy!
  • Nothing beats the street scene we're all used to. People had a lot of space to look at art and the venues we're great. I hate the new scene. I got rejected too. I would like to see it back on the streets: easy load , easy sales, and easy exit.
  • One of their problems for the last few years has been adapting to construction projects for each annual show. Now that they have an established location they should be able to improve the show and eventually fine tune the layout and proceedures.
  • Thanks for taking the time to do this. Gasp has always been a little hard as far as setup but last year was bad. the reduction of number of artists should help a lot.
