Early Reports on Brookside in Kansas City

Gotta love this headline:

At the Brookside Art Annual, people not only browse, but buy

From the Kansas City Star by Laura Bauer:

Artist Meredith Wenzel, who has been blowing glass for the last 37 years, won’t deny it. She likes happy people.

People who walk through art fairs, gaze at the paintings or the jewelry — and especially
her glass ornaments and vases — and appreciate them. Maybe buy a few.

Not surprising since Wenzel lives in Toledo, Ohio, 45 minutes from Detroit.
Smack in the middle of recession depression...

And here's a little blog discussion of the event, a little humorous --- I have to agree, do dogs buy art?

  • toooooooooo funny. Now, is the show worth applying to? (ceramics)
  • Susan, I'm laughing out loud...
  • Munks, the onlycrowd/sales -inducing antic that I do is the Gary Seidel method of locking up all the high-rollers in the back of your booth and only let them out when they buy something--works every time for me--get rid of those horse throughs, they are so unseemly--Nels
  • Munks, you are awesome!!! :)))) I love all dogs(cats, parrots, rats...) but I would never bring my dog to art show, because I love my dog and don't want him to be under somebody's foot. But it was much better this year in Brookside, not so many dogs and giant strollers. I cannot say the same about sales, it was very much down this year for me.

  • lmao. Munks, can't wait to see what you offer for the parrots or how about the cats on leashes?
  • Munks, sometimes you scare me.
  • well i can see that i am in the minority here but here goes anyway......
nobody with a dog ever bought anything from me.
it might be great for socializing dogs but i don't think it does anything for sales.
also when a dog pees on your tent it might cut into that carefree easy flowing feeling
especially when all the other dogs suddenly become very fascinated by your tent
i like shows that keep dogs out.
  • I too have water bowls for the dogs and have no problems with dogs entering my tent. What ever happened to the easy flowing carefree years? Some attitudes are just too uptight!
  • Dogs don't buy art but their owners do. As recently as last year, I was one of those complaining about dogs at art festivals. I now have a dog and she has been to 6 art festivals so far this year. People bring their dogs because it is a good way to socialize them. We don't have too many opportunities to go to places with our pets unless you are a fan of Bass Pro Shops and Petsmart/Petco. As usual, the problem is not usually the dog but the person attached to the other end of the leash. If you control the dog, they don't take up much space and if they are enjoying themselves, their owners won't be in a hurry to leave the festival.
