Deland or Lake Wales in March 2011

I'm trying to decide between 2 art fests for March 26/27. 1 - Deland outdoor arts & crafts fest or 2. Lake Wales art show. I'm a fused dichroic glass artist, with most of my work being jewelry in the $25 - $40 range, and some ecthed dichroic panels in the $100 - $200 range, and kaleidoscopes in the $300 - $450 range. But by far most of my sales are from the jewelry.

I've never attended either show. In fact I'm new to the show circuit. Any input on either show would be appreciated.

Thanks.

  • Thanks R.C. the input is appreciated
  • Thanks Lynda. Sounds like the deland show is a "pass".
  • I did the spring Arts & Crafts show in Deland March 2010. I silversmith and fabricate sterling silver and gemstone jewelry. I left after the first day. Never will I darken the door of Deland again. I broke my rule of going inland to the center of the state, instead of staying on the coast. Shows on the east coast of Florida do well for me. Loading in was a problem and I had to dolly across grass and no room behind the booth. I did get out of it with my booth fee, but not gas from St.Aug. I had 2customers, one of whom bought a nice seahorse pendant with a sapphire, so I had one good sale. Lots of lookers and NO buyers, even the small stuff! The same was happening all around me. I did hear afterwards that a couple of artists with 2D work did o.k. More on the Deland area: I spoke with another jewelry artist in Feb. at the Tomoka Gem & Mineral Show which I do every year. It is held near Deland. I do this show because it is inexpensive, inside in January, they provide tables, and I enjoy buying from the gemologists. She has FAB jewelry and gemstones (takes up 8 tables at the show). She did the Deland Fine Art Show in the Fall and didn't even sell one pair of earrings! It put her in a real financial bind. I just finished Halifax Art Show in Daytona and Flamingo Follies in New Smyrna Beach. I'll blog in a few min. They were the best shows I've done in 3 years!
  • My wife reminds me that I have described the "Fall" show in Deland. She thinks I have also done the "Spring" show, but I can not "picture" it. So, that should tell you something.... Sorry.
  • I've done each of these shows many times. I do photography so can't tell you how you might do.

I still consider Lake Wales each year, I do not consider Deland anymore. At LW you can set up on Friday and then park behind your booth for the show. Really pleasant. At Deland you set up early Saturday morning along with everyone else and if you're new you get located on the outskirts of town (nowhere near the center of the show). You're back to back with no storage, can't drive to your space must load in from some parking lot near your space.

You can probably make more money at Deland, but not much more. For me, money isn't everything.
  • Apply to both and do the one you get into, if you get into one.
