I would like advice about credit card machines. Being a novice in the art fair business, I would like to remain cost effective but not at the expense of being cheap.
Good advice from Michelle, Joyce. Also type "credit card" in the search box at the top of this page and review some of the discussions already held on that topic on this site.
Ask yourself.... How many shows do you plan on doing a year? a month? Are your art prices more high end? Are you willing to pay the fees that go with having a cc machine?
I would check out 1st National Processing as they not only offer several kinds of machines they offer great advice on reading the fine print of contracts, working with artists on fine tuning their needs, etc. They have an ad on this site on the right hand side of the screen for added help.
Recently though credit card companies - Visa, MC, etc. are making cc processors (us - the artists) pay a quarterly $30 fee for "anti-theft and fraud" protection. Be cautious about this as I do hope something can be done to regulate this soon. As far as I know there is no way around it if you choose to accept/take credit cards.
