I am wondering if anyone has any input on the Corus Christi festival of the arts held the end of March. For me it would be a 26 hour drive. I hear the economy is good in Texas.
I read a review in an unnamed arts magazine where an artist did zero (as in $0.00) two years in a row and thought he/she would try it a third time because they were treated well and he/she thought he/she could build a following. Uh huh, right to the poor house!
And please, we are "artists" or "craftspersons" or some such, but don't call us - and yourself - a "vendor." It only encourages those promoters and others who run shows to consider us on a par with buy/sell, food vendors, flea marketers, and others. We all work hard to create, produce, market and show our work - take pride in the name "artist!"
I just had to comment on this because of the "economy is good in Texas" portion. We just found our former Ft. Worth(less) house on the internet for sale at $138,000 - down from the $220,000 "investment" we had in it before we were forced to short sell it at $158,000 in 2007 and lose everything. Two other small business friends still struggling to keep businesses - and homes. Many other ad/marketing agencies long-closed and gone. Combined with a hit and run and $4,400 online identity theft traced back to a vendor cheated by my now-former employer, a family "Christian" business...I guess it all depends on your looking glass.
I was there last year. not a bad show but agreed not worth that long drive. i barely covered cost of fee and hotel and (10hr) drive - barely. vendor quality was quite good but crowd was "surprised" at the fair. not sure if they publicized locally at all. sooo many people said "i wish i had known this was here this weekend." no kidding.
having said that, the organizers were very nice and welcoming and may have been an - oversight - that will hopefully be corrected??? they seem to be sort of embarrassed by the crowd response. i might give it another shot ??
i doubt though that corpus economy necessarily indicative of texas. if i did the show again i would gear up for lower $ end purchases...
I have not done the show myself, but have heard that the show is low to moderate on the sales meter. Not a show to use as a anchor for a twenty six hour drive. If you could use it as a filler show combined with something bigger, then you might consider it. Good luck.
