Cherokee Triangle Art FAir

The Cherokee Triangle Art fair is held every year the week befor the Kentucky Derby.

The location is a charming neighborhood off of Bardstown Road in Louisville, KY.

The committee does a good job of organizing the show. They are usually friendly & helpful.

For several years now the Derby Festival added a mini marathon the Sat. morning of the show.Needless to say it causes many headaches for artists & fairgoers.

Folks usually come out & it can be a decent little show, the first of the season for many artists.

This year with severe storms forcast for Sat. afternoon the show closed 2 hours early. Winds of 80 mph were forecast. They never materialized, but it did rain very hard. Sun. started out sunny then got cold & rainy. The buyers were few & far between. Many of us had our worst Cherokee show ever this year.

Usually the buyers still come to the show even in the rain, not so much this year.

Some suggestions:

1. CHANGE THE DATE! Why do we have to keep fighting the race traffic & parking problems?

2. Jury the show a bit better. While there are many fine artists in the show the quality has been going down for awhile now.

3. More advertising. This show can't rest on past reputation or become just a neighborhood show. The good artists will stop coming altogether.

  • I've done this show in the past and did very well at it also.

For a smaller sized show, Id also recommend it.
  • This was my fourth year to do this show and despite the weather, I increased my sales from last year, and they were good last year when we had perfect weather. I had several customers from prior years look me up and the support of the neighborhood is always great, they'll come out rain or shine.
Louisville is my home town, so I know to avoid the race and blocked streets on Sat. morning. I just make sure I'm early, around 7:30 and you can get your vehicle into the fair site to unload and there is still close street parking, even hauling a trailer.
This was my first Midwest show of the season and I'm hoping this is an indication of a good Midwest season to come.
  • This was my first show of the season, and my first time at this show. Boy Saturday was a bummer with the rain and the show closing early, but Sunday was a good day even with the rain.
Getting to the show was a problem and I just read the Cherokee Triangle Assoc. press release that they continue to work with the marathon organizers to get things changed.
I also thought that there were several vendors that didn't come under the fine art category, but the show is big enough that there was enough fine art to keep the crowd coming, however if they continue to allow this then the show will start to loose the support of the customers, and the artist too. I will apply for this show again next year, and hope for better weather.
  • This was my first time to do Cherokee and I did well in spite of the rain and hassles. The mini marathon made things extremely difficult for us to even get to our booth on the first morning. Because of the rain we did not want to leave 150 handbags overnight in our booth so we had to hand carry them several blocks the first morning as we could not get our van anywhere near our booth. However, I made many great connections and enough sales to make it very worthwhile. Several people told me I should try St. James, but it seems too big too me. I would love to have more input about the St. James show.
  • And here is a photo and an article from the Louisville Courier about Cherokee:

  • As far as being like St. James, there are about 200 artists at Cherokee. Some of those artists do St. James as well. It's a much better size than ST. James as far as being able to "Get a piece of the pie".
Cherokee is a very nice little show. Usually It's a better Sunday show than Saturday. I think that was true even before the race started.
  • Thanks for this information, Toni. I've always been curious about this event -- is it anything like St. James? It gets billed in the press as being its equal.
