Wondered if anyone was familiar with the Cedar Key Shrimp Festival? I am aware of the Art Show in April, although I don't know how it went this last spring. They have a Shrimp Festival in October in this sleepy little Florida town. I'd like to try it because I'm tired of the central Florida shows and want to do something fun. Most of the shows on the coast have been recovering and doing o.k. from what I've heard from others. I plan to do the new Amelia Island show in October because I've done well there in the past. The very next weekend is the Shrimp Festival in Cedar Key so I'll have to do some scrambling to get ready. Then I'll have a break til Hallifax the first of November. It sounded like fun and we could use a get-a-way weekend, but thought I'd better have a recommendation. By the by, The Atlantic Beach Art in the Park went really well. I'd complained about it last winter with the way they processed $ and artist acceptance. I made recommendations to the committe as other did and hopefully this little show that out-grew itself will have some policies in place for next year. I hope so because, I'd like to do it again. Stay cool in July. Florida has been incredibly hot!
Thanks so much for the recommendation. I'll give it a try. I plan to have alot of the less expensive items and alot of my seahorses of various kinds, jellyfish, lighthouses, and starfish. I will definitely make reservations ahead. I noticed that most of the motels increase prices for the spring art show, but not the shrimp festival. we are looking for a comfortable inexpensive motel. There seem to be alot of cottages in the old Florida vein. Not much in accomodations near by until you get near Gainesville. Thanks again for the rec.
I did the Cedar Key Seafood Fest last fall and the Celebration of the ARts this spring - they were both very good shows for me. I sell jewelry and do have a bit of a local following since I live nearby. I have to say both shows are well run, but different - the seafood fest has more crafters and most people are really there for the food and fun. The volunteers are very friendly and you can't help but get a kick out of the local school kids who go up and down the street all day with their little wagon - "Ice cold water, Cedar Key Safety Patrol, help us go to Washington, (thump thump) D. C." Okay, it does get a little old after awhile.... The Arts fest has some great art and people were clearly there to buy. One of the Florida Highwaymen was there and often had a big crowd around his booth. I don't get a chance to talk to vendors other than my neighbors, who I think did fairly well with pottery. We had quite nasty weather on Sunday and many of us left in the morning - it was the same storm system that had spawned some nasty tornadoes the day before. The Arts fest had some nice little gifts for the vendors, and Tony's Restaurant (home of world champion Clam Chowder - ya gotta try it) provided a nice breakfast buffet Sat. morning. If you're lucky enough to be in front of the banks or other businesses that are closed you can usually park right there. Cedar Key is just a really nice little town, and since it's close to home for me I'll keep doing the shows.
I have done both Cedar Key shows many times, the spring show was the best--but we are talking old days. If you can make money at the October Amelia show, then you can probably make moola at the Shrimp Festival. They mostly come to eat--and drink, sometimes even buy art. The town is a fun place to hang out at, give it a try but book lodging early the place fills up--Aloha, nels
