  • Boy after reading that they extended the deadline because of a lack of applications it makes me feel even more confused and disappointed. I did this show in 2009 and two others put on by the art center, I did well at all three. A local radio station owner purchased some of my art and said they would like to do an interview with me before this years show and a television station filmed my both twice and asked if I would be willing to come on for a short interview a week before the show. So, I was eagerly waiting to do this show in 2010, it was one of only three shows where I was rejected.

My media is photography and I know that there are always a lot of entries in this category. They put on a great show and I will apply to it again next year and see what happens.
  • I can understand your frustration, Bill. The problem with this idea from the promoters point of view is that some of the people in the original batch of applicants will get a "yes" while the others will be left hanging. It makes handling the applications a mess for the office staff (usually one person)...and can result in many unhappy phone calls.

In addition, the extending of deadlines (which I agree with you, I personally hate) enables the staff to expand their choice. I have personally seen jury pools where fully a third of applicants are jewelers. The need to have something more than jewelry is important to an event.
  • I had applied for this show with the original deadline, but I recieved an email on the day we were originaly told we would be notified that they hadn't recieved enough applications to fill the show so they were going to advertise a new deadline in hopes of getting more applications. I have mixed feelings about all of this. I would like to do this show, however I feel like artist that followed the rules should have been juried in or out as planned and then the promoters could have extened the deadline to when ever they wanted and those artist that made the original deadline could make plans to do that show or move on. I have done a number of show the last couple of years that had many empty spots, so why should this show be any different, as long as the promotor is maintaining the quality of art at their show the customers will be happy.

  • Hi Connie, I just called US customs and found out that I would have to contact an Import broker, so I called one. They have a form that I would have to fill out (no fee!), to present at the border when I cross. Sounds fairly straight forward.
    Thanks for responding.

  • I personally do know Canadians who cross the border to do art fairs in the U.S.

There is also a thread in the discussions on this site about this issue. Take a look there.
  • I would be curious to know if there is a problem with Canadians who would like to show? Is there a proceedure you follow, etc: paperwork at the border?
