Call for Artists: Art History Channel

How's this for a great lead? Yesterday I received a call from the Art History Channel. They are looking for 21st Century artists to feature on their new channel (launched in 2010) on Direct TV, TimeWarner and Comcast.

Artists Wanted For 21st Century Artists New TV National Cable Show.

They'll be making studio visits and talking directly with the artists selected. The initial season of the show is being presented in May, they are looking for people for the fall lineup.

Sounds like some great publicity to me. What do you think?

  • Connie - the whole thing is a bit confusing.  Is it a 'Channel' (ie like ESPN is a channnel) or is it a show on a particular channel (like 'American Pickers' is a show on the History Channel).

If it is a Channel, what Cable Company will have it?  If it is a show, what Channel will it be on?  'Coming in May' is no better than back in January when they said 'coming in March'.

  • There are no sponsors.   There is a guy.   Google "art history channel"  and scam.
  • Sure, Linda. It is in the link up above...

Additionally, just like at the big event-type festivals it is not the artists that make them happen, it is the sponsors -- they have sponsors who are backing the programming.

  • I am incredulous.   I do not believe there is an Art History Channel insofar as a channel that has been picked up by any Provider.    There is no jurying going on!!!!   He is changing up the way he collects the cash.   I have seen this kind of thing before.    They will pay to advertise and then use that as proof of their standing (i.e. they made a big deal about appearing on Absolute Arts on their FB page but it was purchase advertising.)    This is one of those cases where we need to be smart and protect ourselves and other artists.     Him saying that "when the programs begin the negativity will be overcome" could be code for that is his exit strategy.    Who is HE anyway?    I want details!!!!!
  • Even if 1,880 artists submitted apps, at $35 a pop, $67,000 wouldn't be enough money to put on a show series. There would have to be other funding.

Connie, care to make public that phone number?

  • On their web site they give a list of the artists who will be "featured" on the first program, May 10. There are around 188 artists on the list.

  • I alerted the Director of Media Communication at the Art History Channel about the content of this discussion. We talked and the gist of his communication is this is a new venture, the first shows will be coming in May, they are available to answer phone calls with questions about the program and they believe that when the programs begin that the negativity will be overcome.
  • But, I have to add, I didn't pay a submission fee. Must've been before they tried that cash cow.
  • I sent low res images, they sent me a congrats and an invoice to pay 50 bucks thru paypal. I couldn't find anything on the web about them so red flags went up for me. Glad to see those links on the scam, so my gut feeling was right.
