Bloomington / Normal IL Sugar Creek

This past weekend, we were in Bloomington/Normal IL's Sugar Creek Arts Festival. We arrived on Saturday morning, with an easy check in process. Didn't even have to get out of the car. We worked out way down the street to our booth location. Being able to pull the car right up to the booth ... always a benefit to us. The booths are very tight together. It would be nice if we had a couple extra inches, between booth spaces.

We got set up and parked the car very easily. The street is a little tight for moving around during set up, but it works. The show is in the University area. As a result, you get a lot of students in the mix. Bloomington IL is also the home of State Farm Insurance, with over 20,000 employees.

We were told in advance that people show up early for the show ... and the did. Both days. There was a lot of excitement right away. Lots of interest. But by noon it was getting hot and the crowds seem to "cool off" in interest. It ended up being a decent show for us. Artists around us, were not as happy.  We have accepted that the economy is still not great. I think other artists expected more.

The show is well organized. The staff and volunteers work hard for the artists to make sure everything is running smoothly. They provided plenty of COLD water during the 2 days. Which was needed. I drank a ton of water. Over all, we were happy with the show.

  • I know of a couple - who live there - Bloomington/Normal.  My husband and I stop there as a 1/2 way point when we travel from MD to MN - we live in MD and my husband's family is in MN.  Nice town I have to say.  We spent a few days in town for our friends wedding.  I was surprised they get tornadoes - we missed one the day before we got to the hotel which was was hit - no major damage, but some water damage.  That was about June and it was hot then too.  I will have to ask them if they went to the art fair - they graduated with their Masters from the college there.  I could see where an art fair would be nice there.  Good review!  - Michelle
  • I've never heard of this show before, so it is great to have this exposure for all of the Midwest artists. It seems that shows in college towns are usually pretty good.
  • @ Bo: what artists didn;t do as well, what was there media? It was all over the map. The ones I talked to included pottery, jewelry and painting.

What price point was your best seller? Or what was your best seller? The lower priced items sold best: $85. The highest I sold was $198. I have items that go up to $595. I have 2-D framed mixed media, contemporary art.

What was the quality of the art in the show? Fine art? Fine crafts? Attendees told the the quality has improved over past years. Mainly fine art.

I'd be interested in knowing what a decent show means to you, as we all have different criteria. Made expenses plus some profit? Made booth fee x 4? Got leads or orders for other art? Other? 4x is not worth mine time, when we traveled 3.5 hours.

  • I did the show and i have good Saturday but very slow Sunday. This one show that needs to be over and over to build your clients. I think I only have 2 new customers and even those two saw me last year.
  • This show is very well run.  It was very very hot.  Nice patrons - young to old.  This was my first time at this show....you always hope for more.  I think the weather was really a factor in attendance.  Couldn't be an easier set up, but this depended on your booth location.  As far as quality, it's a mixed bag of work.  Some exceptional work....some questionable "stuff".  At most shows this year, the lower price points move best...I mean $10 to $20....and this is with every show I do..not just this one. You have to make more than your expenses to continue to do a show.  There are shows everywhere...so if this one didn't work for you, choose a different one.  We say, you need to make 10 times your booth to consider it OK.  I did make 10 times my booth fee.
  • I didn't find the American Polish Festival in Sterling Heights MI as accommodating.  The check in process was easy.  The booth had a little space around them.  That was the good part.  They didn't care if artists encroached on the booth next to them.  They had no water available or any other amenities for the artists.  The worst part was that the craft show closed at 7:00 pm on Sunday night but their music went on until 9 or 10 pm and the artists were not allowed to take their car in to pack.  The tents and all of the wares had to be taken out to the road to pack the car.  It was at least 2000 ft.  I am 71 years old and I would never do that show again.
  • THanks for the review Colin and glad to hear you had a decent show!
