  • Duncan used to show at Port Clinton but when I asked him about it at the Grove, he told me he is having a dispute with the state of Illinois so he won't be showing there.  I asked about Lakefront in Milwaukee and he said he used to show there but not anymore.
  • Yep, that would be great! I've never seen him outside of Florida though, have you?

What about Mark Sudduth - he lives in Cleveland. Can you entice him to Royal Oak for your show? I've never gotten him to apply to ABE.

  • Duncan's work is fabulous. I wish I could entice him to come up to Michigan for the Royal Oak Clay, Glass and Metal Show.
  • Geri, My good friend Duncan has had those bullets and other beautiful pieces for less than the biggies; He has evolved into a fabulous glass artist with incredible vision and craftsmanship. Besides scale; the work and thought behind the accomplished piece is complete, and polished. Congrats to Duncan and Mark Suddath who also makes an outstanding piece of art- his glass style is unique and his craftsmanship stands out amoung us all. Power to the Glass Artists .
  • I noticed that Jim wasn't listed when the website first posted the 2011 artists.  When I saw him that weekend, I asked him about it and he told me he was wait-listed and found out a week before that he was in .  He said the best thing about winning an award was knowing he would be in next year so the family could easily come down and join him.

There were 30 glass artists at the grove.  And there was an amazing variety of styles.  Now that I am concentrating on my glass collection rather than pottery, I felt pretty good that I already owned pieces by the grove glass winner and runner up and  the naples best in show.  Duncan's work is spectacular and very showy.  One thing I noticed was that he actually had what he called bullets that were 10"  high pieces of glass with etching on the outside  that were incredibly priced at $150 so you could own one of his pieces for less than 4 figures!

  • I'm not a big fan of Duncan's work. In terms of the glass hierarchy he doesn't register a blip on the radar.  He's perfect for Miami and the rest of Florida, though   However, Jim Wilbat's new pieces are outstanding. His work has reached the next level.
  • How interesting is that! I know that Duncan is the darling of The Grove -- not that the jurors would know that, of course. Mark has wonderful work also and it was great to see him take this prize. So, are you saying, Geri, that Jim didn't get in? Glass is so showy and looks so fabulous on MacFarland at the Grove, I'm thinking the competition is pretty strong. Also, strange, now that I think of it there had to be a gazillion more glass artists at the Grove than at Naples given the size of the show.
  • Interesting that glass won BOS at both of these festivals.

I don't think I am telling tales out of school--James Wilbat was wait-listed for the Grove show.  That says a something about the whole jury process but I am not sure what!
